Matthew Hayden Claims Overseas IPL Players Treat It Bigger Than International Cricket

Matthew Hayden didn’t mince words about how overseas players view the Indian Premier League, and his remarks have landed at a time when the IPL 2026 is already grabbing headlines on and off the field. The former Australia opener suggested that many foreign cricketers treat the tournament as something larger than international cricket itself—an opinion that has only gained more attention after Alastair Cook’s recent comments drew fresh debate around where young players should focus their development.

Cook, in his latest line of thought, urged Jacob Bethell to look toward county cricket rather than spending time warming the bench in the IPL. His suggestion quickly triggered a wave of responses, with Bethell pushing back by indicating that remaining on the sidelines in the IPL could actually suit him better than playing in the County Championship. The conversation then widened beyond the player level, with IPL founder Lalit Modi and Kevin Pietersen also taking to X to criticize Cook’s stance.

Hayden later explained his perspective on the same subject on a YouTube show titled All Over Bar The Cricket. He said, “Talking to different teams, I feel like the foreign players, particularly the South Africans, us (Australians) to a degree, from New Zealand, they tend to bill this competition like it is bigger than even international cricket.” Hayden added that the scale and noise surrounding the league helps create that perception. “You could see why they do that. Because there is so much hype around it. When you are here in the IPL, it doesn’t matter whether you’re broadcasting or just a punter in the streets or in fact, now where we are now on the other side of the fence,” he said. “It just takes over for the entire period of IPL. It is just cricket every day. Sometimes even twice a day.”

IPL 2026: race for the top intensifies

On the field, IPL 2026 has started to take on the look of a high-intensity blockbuster, with teams showing strong collective efforts alongside bursts of individual brilliance. Punjab Kings currently sit at the summit after winning five of their six matches, remaining unbeaten so far. Their scheduled meeting against Kolkata Knight Riders did not produce a result because the fixture was washed out.

Rajasthan Royals are next in the standings in second place, having also won five matches but losing twice. Royal Challengers Bengaluru occupy the third spot with four wins and two defeats. Sunrisers Hyderabad are fourth, matching the four-win mark but with three losses. Delhi Capitals are fifth, followed by Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants. Meanwhile, KKR are positioned tenth in the table.

One of the season’s most discussed names is 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has already made a measurable impact. In seven matches, he has scored 254 runs at an average of 36.29, striking at 220.86. Sooryavanshi has produced two half-centuries and is currently fifth in the Orange Cap race, adding another layer of intrigue to an IPL campaign packed with storylines.
