MI Hand Debuts to Two Newcomers vs GT as Rohit Still Unfit

With Mumbai Indians looking to climb out of the lower end of the table, their reputation for identifying talent was put under the spotlight as they handed competitive debuts to two players who have not yet featured in senior Twenty20 cricket. Gujarat Titans, meanwhile, arrived with a clear intent to control conditions and chose to bowl after winning the toss, a decision shaped by the likelihood of dew on a black-soil surface in Ahmedabad.

Both sides entered the contest with contrasting narratives. Mumbai’s situation has put their “best scouts” identity in focus, while Gujarat’s selection suggested they wanted to maintain momentum after a run of strong results. The match also carried a fresh-blood angle for MI, with 22-year-old Danish Malewar, a batter from Vidarbha, and 21-year-old Krish Bhagat, a pace bowler from Punjab, earning their first opportunities at this level.

Malewar was expected to face the earliest test in the innings, lining up to open for Mumbai. He did so in place of Ryan Rickelton, while Quinton de Kock—Rickelton’s compatriot—has been firmly established as MI’s preferred top-order opener following a century in his first appearance of the season. Rohit Sharma remained unavailable due to a hamstring problem, keeping him out of the XI.

In the bowling department, Bhagat came into the playing group to replace Deepak Chahar. Chahar had been hit for 45 in just 2.3 overs during MI’s previous match against Punjab Kings. Gujarat’s changes also reflected a focus on matchups: the return of Mitchell Santner meant Shardul Thakur was left out, after he conceded 42 runs in his three overs against PBKS.

Gujarat Titans, seeking to move into the top three with a win, stuck with the same core combination that delivered a hat-trick of victories. They did, however, make one additional selection decision, promoting Shahrukh Khan into the starting XI. Rahul Tewatia was named among the potential Impact Players, giving Gujarat another tactical option depending on how the game shaped up.
