MI’s 200-plus chases keep rolling as PBKS join the high-total trend

Mumbai Indians’ ability to chase big totals has once again stood out in IPL 2026, with their recent run chases rewriting several franchise markers. The numbers also underline how often PBKS and MI have been involved in successful 200-plus pursuits across the format, not just in the IPL.

Quick facts: MI, PBKS and the 200-plus trend

  • Mumbai Indians have completed 8 successful chases of 200-plus in the IPL (second-most), with Punjab Kings leading at 11.
  • Three of MI’s eight 200-plus chases have arrived in IPL 2026.
  • PBKS have been on the receiving end of 10 successful 200-plus chases in T20 cricket (most by any team).
  • PBKS and MI collectively hold the most 200-plus target chases in all T20 cricket.
  • West Indies have suffered 8 losses in all T20 cricket (second-most).
  • In the IPL, RCB sit second with 7 successful 200-plus chases.

PBKS, for their part, have endured successful chases of 200-plus on ten occasions, which remains the highest such mark for any side. West Indies are next in the all-T20 tally with eight setbacks. In IPL history, Royal Challengers Bengaluru are second on seven such chases.

MI’s chase prowess is being measured by the late-innings surge too. They scored 50 target runs successfully in the final three overs on Thursday, the highest such total for them in an IPL match. Their previous best in that phase was 49, achieved against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2017.

It’s also rare company at the league level: prior to MI’s feat, only four times in IPL history has a team managed to knock off 50-plus runs in the last three overs of a chase. The latest game strengthened the trend of teams needing to accelerate dramatically as the overs compress.

Last-three-overs fireworks: PBKS vs MI

Thursday’s chase and counterattack were powered by a huge late burst from both sides. PBKS and MI combined for 107 runs in the last three overs (18–20), which ranks as the third-highest total for that phase in any IPL match. Only the 113-run last-three-overs output by KKR and Lucknow Super Giants at DY Patil in 2022 tops it, while Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans posted 111 in the same period in 2024 in Delhi.

PBKS produced 53 of those runs even after slumping to seven wickets down at that stage. That 53 is the greatest number any team has added in the last three overs of an IPL innings after losing seven or more wickets by the time the 18th over begins. The earlier ceiling was 52, set by MI against Deccan Chargers back in 2010.

MI’s method in the 20th over has also been strikingly precise. They have pulled off eight chases requiring 15 or more runs in the final over of an IPL chase. On Thursday, they needed exactly 15 runs in the last over delivered by Xavier Bartlett. Only Chennai Super Kings have done it more frequently, with nine such chases.

PBKS concede 200-plus at record pace

Despite their own late-innings damage, PBKS have also become the benchmark for conceding huge totals in IPL 2026. They have allowed eight 200-plus scores this season, the most by any team in a single IPL edition. They are also only the second side to concede eight 200-plus totals in a T20 tournament, following Southern Punjab, who managed the same number during the National T20 Cup in 2020.

PBKS went on to score 200 or more in every one of the eight matches where they conceded a total of that magnitude this season. In doing so, they also matched the record for the most 200-plus totals scored by a team in a T20 tournament.

The bigger picture shows how 200-plus chases are shaping IPL 2026. Of the successful 200-plus target chases, 15 out of 53 have ended in victory this season. The previous high for such successful 200-plus chases in a single season was nine in 2025. Since the start of 2023, there have been 38 successful chases of 200-plus targets.

Bumrah’s captaincy debut and wicketless run

In the MI camp, Jasprit Bumrah’s leadership milestone arrived on Thursday. He had played 156 IPL matches before his captaincy debut, and only Ravindra Jadeja, who has 200 matches before taking the captain’s role, has more experience in that specific sequence.

Bumrah became the third player to captain MI in IPL 2026. Across IPL history, there have been only four instances of a team operating under three different captains in a single season, with MI also featuring back in 2008.

Bowling numbers around the captaincy switch have been notable as well. Bumrah has finished wicketless in nine of his 12 IPL 2026 matches. In eight of those nine wicketless outings, he delivered four overs without taking a wicket. Only Praveen Kumar, who recorded nine wicketless matches while bowling four overs in 2012, has more such wicketless four-over appearances in an IPL season.
