Mumbai Indians returned to winning form with a thrilling, run-heavy win over Lucknow Super Giants in their IPL 2026 encounter on Monday at the Wankhede Stadium. Lucknow, batting first, posted a daunting 228/5 in 20 overs, powered by Nicholas Pooran’s sudden resurgence—he struck 63 off just 21 balls. Yet the chase turned into a statement from MI as they overhauled the target with eight balls still left, finishing with six wickets in hand. The pursuit was driven by Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, who starred at the top with a blistering opening partnership that broke the rhythm of Lucknow’s bowling attack. Rohit made 84 while Rickelton contributed 83, steering the momentum firmly in Mumbai’s favour.
For Mumbai, the victory carried extra weight. After a difficult start that saw them lose seven of their first nine matches, this result injected fresh confidence and kept their chances of reaching the playoffs firmly in play. It also arrived at a time when the squad had to adjust quickly: Hardik Pandya, the team’s regular skipper, missed the match due to a back spasm, leaving Suryakumar Yadav to lead the side.
Under Suryakumar’s captaincy, MI delivered a comprehensive performance from start to finish. Following the match, Deepak Chahar’s sister, Malti, shared her congratulations on X (formerly Twitter). Her post singled out Suryakumar for his leadership and also praised Deepak for completing his full quota of overs, reflecting the family pride surrounding the all-round effort that helped Mumbai keep Lucknow’s high score under control.
In her message, Malti wrote: “THIS felt like MI again! Almost everyone performed. Well played, Ryan and Rohit bhaiya! Nice captaincy by Surya. And Deepak delivering all four overs—well bowled, bro! Proper team game. This is MI!”
Bowling played a key role in the end result, even with Lucknow posting 228. Deepak Chahar finished his spell having bowled four overs for 43 runs, remaining wicketless in the innings, but he tightened the screws late—conceding only 15 runs in his final two overs. Those controlled overs proved especially important in limiting Lucknow’s total to a number MI could realistically chase.
After the win, Suryakumar Yadav explained how the team approached the chase and why the period after the powerplay mattered. “To be very frank, we’ve been in this situation a lot of times this season. It was nothing new, to be very honest,” he said. “But then I knew, T20 cricket after the powerplay from 7 to 10, that’s the best time when you can pull the game off. We knew two wickets here and there, and I can take control of the game. And the way all the bowlers responded, I think they showed a lot of character. (on getting back into the game) I think about 8-9 overs, they were 110 or 120 for 1 or 2. I don’t really remember. But then from there, pulling it to 162 for 5 in 16 overs, I think the performance was unbelievable.”
