MI’s Playoff Hopes Flinch Again as Hardik Pandya Shakes After 4th IPL Loss

Mumbai Indians have slipped to eighth spot in the 10-team IPL 2026 standings after suffering another defeat, this time to Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. With four losses in their opening five outings of the campaign, MI’s playoff hopes are starting to look fragile as the race for the top intensifies. The turning point came when Mumbai couldn’t hold on to a 196-run target, with PBKS chasing it down in just 16.3 overs.

Hardik Pandya admitted the loss left him short on answers, saying MI must revisit their approach and identify where things are going wrong. He questioned whether the issues are rooted in individual performances, team execution, or planning, and suggested the squad will have to take stock and decide what to do next. Pandya also stressed that credit is due to Punjab for outplaying them across phases.

In his post-match assessment, Pandya pointed to conditions and momentum, noting that the ball began to reverse and that the dew in the second innings offered some improvement. However, he felt Punjab still did a better job overall—bowling, batting, and fielding—adding that MI now need to decide whether to make tough changes or continue with the current direction in hopes of a turnaround. “These are some harsh questions that we eventually need to answer, and ownership has to be taken,” he said.

De Kock ton wasted as Punjab chase comfortably

Quinton de Kock’s commanding century proved insufficient as Punjab Kings overpowered Mumbai Indians to secure a seven-wicket victory. Sent in first, MI posted 195 for six, powered by de Kock’s unbeaten 112 off 60 balls. Despite the big individual score, the innings didn’t translate into a defendable total once Punjab’s chase took off.

De Kock built a 122-run partnership with Naman Dhir, who made 50 off 68 deliveries, before adding another 41 runs in quick time alongside captain Hardik Pandya (14). On the bowling front for Punjab, Arshdeep Singh finished with three wickets for 22, while Shashank Singh chipped in with one wicket for 19.

Punjab’s successful chase hinged on a 139-run stand for the third wicket between Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer. Prabhsimran remained unbeaten on 80 from 39 balls, while Iyer struck 66 off 35 as PBKS crossed the line in 16.3 overs. AM Ghazanfar took two wickets for 31, but it wasn’t enough to break the momentum once the partnership got going.
