Nitish Kumar Reddy will not feature in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL 2026 match against Kolkata Knight Riders after the all-rounder was ruled out due to illness, a late blow that also forced SRH to tinker with their Hyderabad XI for Sunday’s home fixture. SRH captain Pat Cummins confirmed the situation at the toss after winning it and choosing to bat first.
Cummins confirms Nitish’s illness-led exit
Speaking at the toss, Cummins said Nitish attempted to make himself available but could not recover in time to be considered for selection.
- Cummins: “Nitish misses out due to illness. He tried to get up but he misses out.”
- Cummins added that Ravichandran Smaran would come in for his first IPL appearance.
- Cummins also confirmed Harshal Patel’s inclusion, with Harshal replacing Harsh Dubey.
The timing of the change left no doubt that the decision was fitness-related rather than a call driven by form or tactical planning. With illness ruling Nitish out, SRH had to reshuffle their playing group right before a crucial contest against KKR.
SRH XI alterations: Smaran debuts, Harshal returns
With Nitish unavailable, SRH handed Ravichandran Smaran his first match at this level as a direct replacement. Alongside that change, Harshal Patel also returned to the side, coming in for Harsh Dubey.
- Ravichandran Smaran brought into the XI for Nitish Kumar Reddy (first game).
- Harshal Patel replaces Harsh Dubey in the playing XI.
Why Nitish’s absence matters for SRH’s middle order
Nitish’s absence is particularly significant for SRH because of the role he plays in their batting structure—providing middle-order insurance and adding all-round balance to the team’s overall composition.
SRH have built much of their approach around aggressive batting led by Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen. In that framework, Nitish is valued as an Indian option capable of stabilising the innings when the higher-risk strategy does not fully land.
Before the match, Nitish had described that exact responsibility—highlighting that SRH’s attacking style can sometimes fail, and that players in his mould, including Klaasen, Salil and Aniket, must step in with the ability to steer the innings toward a strong total.
- Nitish had said SRH’s aggressive brand can sometimes not work out.
- In those moments, he pointed to the need for players like him, Klaasen, Salil and Aniket to step in and post a strong score.
He also clarified the mindset behind his role, stressing team needs over personal milestones.
“For me, it’s about what the team needs from me. Just want to give 100 percent. No individual goals for me to score these many runs and these many wickets. In that situation, whatever the team requires from my side, that’s what I want to do,” Nitish Reddy had said.
KKR changes too, but SRH’s late call is the headline
Even with SRH forced into a late fitness-driven reshuffle, they still have plenty of options in the XI. Klaasen, Salil Arora, Aniket Verma and debutant Smaran are expected to form the middle-order block, helping SRH maintain structure despite Nitish’s illness.
However, the absence does mean Cummins’ side must adjust balance just before a key fixture against KKR. KKR, for their part, also made selections for the match, bringing in Finn Allen and Manish Pandey.
With Nitish sidelined, the biggest talking point in the build-up remains SRH having to field the game without one of their key Indian all-rounders—an alteration that changes not only the batting lineup, but also the flexibility SRH typically rely on in tight phases.
