Pathum Nissanka: Sri Lankan stars must seize IPL chances with impact

Delhi Capitals batter Pathum Nissanka believes the Indian Premier League represents a genuine opportunity for Sri Lankan cricketers, and insists that anyone who earns a place must make it count through impactful performances. With a few members of his squad sidelined by injuries, the Sri Lanka international underlined the need to seize the openings that come along, adjust quickly to match situations, and deliver for the team. “Every Sri Lankan wants to play in the IPL, and if someone gets a chance, they must perform. A couple of players aren’t available because they’re injured, but we’re getting our opportunity, and we have to play well,” Nissanka said to reporters.

Nissanka then provided a timely contribution for Delhi in their Wednesday clash against Gujarat Titans in New Delhi. He struck 41 runs off 24 balls, including six fours and a six, showcasing the kind of acceleration that can swing a chase.

Delhi elected to bowl first, and Gujarat Titans posted 210 for 4. Shubman Gill, captaining the side, top-scored with 70 off 45 balls, featuring four boundaries and five maximums. Washington Sundar added 55 off 32 balls with six fours and two sixes, while Jos Buttler contributed 52 off 27 balls, struck with three fours and five sixes to help GT build a formidable total.

Chasing 211, Nissanka played his role with intent and combined effectively with KL Rahul to put together a strong start. Together, they amassed 76 runs in just eight overs, giving Delhi momentum early in the innings. Despite that promising platform, the Capitals fell short, losing to Gujarat by the narrow margin of one run.

After the defeat, Nissanka also spoke about the mindset behind the opening partnership with Rahul. He said both batters targeted aggression during the powerplay as part of their plan, allowing them to accumulate quickly while setting the tone for the chase. He further credited Rahul’s experience and guidance, explaining that the advice helps him adjust to different grounds and match conditions, while also stressing his own confidence and readiness to bring his best whenever he gets the opportunity to bat. “Rahul and I tried to dominate in the power play. That’s our game plan. We batted really well today. He shares his experience and gives me some tips on how to play in these venues. I try to do my best every time because I trust myself, I believe in it, and I go and do it,” Nissanka added.

In the standings following the result, Delhi Capitals sit fourth in the points table with two wins and one loss, while Gujarat Titans are sixth, having collected one win and suffered two defeats.
