PBKS and SRH Deliver Big Chases as Debate on Fair Batting Heats Up

Saturday marked a landmark stretch for the Indian Premier League, as Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad produced emphatic chases to rewrite the record books. PBKS chased down a daunting 265 set by Delhi Capitals, while SRH completed a successful run chase against Rajasthan Royals, knocking over RR’s 228/6 with nine deliveries remaining. The day’s drama also sparked a heated conversation in cricket circles, with former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar questioning whether modern conditions have tilted the contest too far towards batters.

Manjrekar argued that the game’s evolution has helped hitters more than it has helped bowlers. In a post on X, he pointed to the introduction of helmets and larger, more powerful bats for batters, saying that if the sport has made those changes, bowling should have received a compensating adjustment. His suggestion was straightforward: widen the margin for bowlers by lengthening boundaries to restore balance.

“When cricket gave batters helmets and chunkier bats it should have given bowlers 10 metres longer boundaries,” Manjrekar wrote on X on April 25, 2026.

Supporters and critics alike then piled into the discussion online, with many echoing the view that the sport needs a fairer battle between bat and ball. Some messages went as far as warning that the format could become increasingly predictable for hitters if the trend continues, referencing the way high-scoring games dominate the narrative.

Among the responses, one fan said, “At this pace the IPL will become like Hong Kong super sixes, in a decade #IPL2026.” Another post claimed, “Punjab Kings chased down 265 against Delhi Capitals with 7 balls in a T20 game,” while others questioned whether the league has become overly batting-friendly due to the way games are being played.

Several opinions were even more blunt, with one user describing the competition as “a batter-only show” and asserting that bowlers receive little assistance. Another comment argued that it has become “literally becoming a 300-run game on the flattest pitches,” while also stressing that earlier versions of the tournament were more enjoyable because captains could still defend totals around 180.

Amid the debate, the on-field numbers from the same day only intensified the argument. A separate post summed up the atmosphere by saying, “A thousand-run day in IPL,” adding that T20 cricket in India has changed significantly and has become harder to separate batters from the bigger scoring environment.

On the match front, PBKS’s chase against Delhi Capitals became the centrepiece of the record surge. Their 265-run target pursuit stands as the highest successful chase in IPL history, surpassing PBKS’s own previous benchmark of 262 against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024.

Delhi Capitals had posted the 265-run mark, but PBKS turned the game into a chase defined by aggression from the outset. Last season’s defeated finalists provided a sharp response from ball one, with Prabhsimran Singh setting the tone using a rapid 76 off just 26 deliveries. His strike rate of 292.3 underlined how quickly the chase was taking shape, and Priyansh Arya offered immediate follow-up with 43 off 17 balls at a strike rate of 252.9.

After the early momentum, the powerplay became the foundation of the chase. The pair combined to post 116 runs without losing a wicket in the first six overs, shifting the game from a potentially tricky pursuit into a confident chase with clear intent.

Even after the openers were dismissed, captain Shreyas Iyer took control with composure, striking 71 off 36 balls. He guided the innings home with the calm of a side that never lost belief, and the scoreboard reflected the impact: 20 fours and 20 sixes. Notably, 200 runs in the chase came purely through boundaries.

In a separate blockbuster, SRH also delivered a statement performance in their chase against Rajasthan Royals. Half-centuries from Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma helped SRH overcome RR’s 228/6 with nine balls to spare, leaving Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s second IPL century unable to prevent the defeat.
