Punjab Kings endured a tough outing in the field during their top-of-the-table showdown against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday, misjudging three chances in the outfield. Prabhsimran Singh also missed a straightforward stumping opportunity off Yuzvendra Chahal’s bowling. Although Chahal was on track to make early inroads—potentially even reaching a four-wicket haul within his first three overs—the PBKS side’s lack of clean execution left the spinner frustrated.
The trouble began when Cooper Connolly failed to hold on to Ishan Kishan at deep backward square leg, with Lockie Ferguson the bowler. That was followed by another pair of dropped chances: Shashank Singh and Ferguson each let go of a catch off Chahal’s bowling, leaving the veteran leg-spinner visibly stunned.
“Chahal is having a rotten night in terms of fortune,” the commentator said after Prabhsimran slipped up on Kishan’s stumping in the 11th over. By then, the damage to Chahal’s spell had already been compounded by PBKS’s inability to convert key moments.
Those errors weren’t isolated for Shashank either. He has fumbled four catches in IPL 2026 so far, which is the highest number by any PBKS player in the ongoing season.
Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting looked on helplessly, but he still offered a sympathetic take on what his player was going through. “Poor Shashank Singh, it seems the ball is following him everywhere,” Ponting remarked during the broadcast.
Shashank returned to the playing XI after missing the previous match against the Gujarat Titans, a game PBKS lost by four wickets. With the lineup adjusted, Punjab hoped the return would bring stability in the field and sharper execution in the key phases.
After winning the toss, PBKS captain Iyer confirmed the decision to bowl first. “We will bowl first. So far, we have learned amazing things in the last few matches we have lost. We have no complaints so far because of travelling. Everyone is holding up well as professionals. Last match SRH chased, so I thought we would bowl. Shashank comes in,” he said.
For SRH, Nitish Kumar Reddy also made a comeback in the playing XI after sitting out the previous match. SRH captain Pat Cummins shared a similar view on the toss decision and the conditions ahead of the chase. “I also would have bowled first. Hopefully, we come up great tonight. The crowds have supported us very well this season. I can’t really judge the pitch; hopefully, we will put some runs on the board. Nitish is back for us tonight,” Cummins said.
