Top of the points table during the majority of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 league phase, Punjab Kings now find themselves trying to hold on to the fourth spot. Their slide intensified on Monday after a loss to Delhi Capitals, a result that extended their losing run to four straight matches and reignited questions about how the franchise has been planning its bowling combinations and match-day decisions. The scrutiny only grew when Yuzvendra Chahal—selected in the playing XI—was not used at all against Delhi, leaving supporters and analysts to wonder what the thinking was behind going without a specialist spinner in the conditions.
PBKS then added another unusual twist to the aftermath, with the team sending their spin bowling coach, Sairaj Bahutule, to speak to the press. Instead of hiding behind diplomacy, Bahutule was asked to explain why the side stuck with an all-pace approach, even with a spinner available in the XI. He acknowledged that there had been consideration during a timeout, but argued that the match environment favored the fast bowlers and that the team decided to trust them to strike early.
Bahutule said, “Definitely there was a thought (about bowling spinners) during the time-out, but I think the ball was seaming and the conditions were suitable for the fast bowlers. So I think the decision was very spontaneous to continue with the fast bowlers and see how we can get those wickets, which we did early on. But I think one partnership just took it away from us.” His comments suggested the plan was to attack for breakthroughs upfront, yet the momentum shifted once a key stand developed.
With the playoffs now in the balance, questions naturally turned to whether Punjab Kings should rethink personnel or roles as the league stage winds down. Asked if any significant alterations could be made to revive the remaining stretch, Bahutule played down the idea of a major overhaul. He stressed that the group that had been performing earlier in the campaign should be given the opportunity to correct the details rather than reshuffle everything.
“I think the team that has been doing so well, yes, we have lost a few games. We will again reflect on certain areas only. There won’t be any major changes, in the sense that everybody has been performing. But we will definitely look into it and see how we can just turn it around for ourselves,” he said.
The timing makes the message sharper. After remaining unbeaten in their first seven outings, Punjab Kings have now dropped four consecutive matches, and that run has put their qualification plans under threat. Chahal’s absence from the bowling attack in the Delhi game has been a particularly prominent talking point, with his non-usage standing out given his role as a frontline option in the squad.
When Bahutule was asked to pinpoint why the defeat happened, he echoed captain Shreyas Iyer’s line of thinking and laid emphasis on both bowling phases and the fielding effort. Rather than focusing solely on tactics, he pointed to missed chances at crucial times—suggesting that if those opportunities had been taken, the outcome could have swung. He also made it clear that Punjab Kings need to respond quickly and not dwell on the loss.
“Definitely we will look into certain phases of our bowling and also the fielding part. Again, today unfortunately we dropped a few catches again at a crucial time, so that was very important. And I think we will reflect, but again, there is no time for us to really brood about it; we must move ahead. At a crucial time, we are dropping catches, which unfortunately is breaking the momentum that we were getting. Because if we had taken two catches, I don’t think they would have reached the target; it would have been very difficult for them and we may have won the game by 20 runs,” he asserted.
