Punjab Kings extended their IPL 2026 misery to a fifth consecutive loss after Mumbai Indians chased down 201 with six wickets to spare on Thursday. The defeat left Punjab’s playoff hopes in a precarious position, while also tightening the noose around a new franchise blemish: they now own the most losses in T20 cricket when defending 200-plus totals.
Quick facts
- Punjab Kings suffered their fifth straight defeat in IPL 2026.
- Mumbai Indians chased 201 and won by 6 wickets with one ball remaining.
- Punjab now have 10 defeats in T20s when defending 200-plus scores (most in the format).
- Next on the list: West Indies (8), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (7), Chennai Super Kings (6).
The match also underlined how rare these high-scoring defenses have become for Punjab. They have now lost 10 times while protecting totals of 200 or more in T20 cricket, a mark that leads all teams. West Indies sit next with eight such defeats, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru on seven and Chennai Super Kings on six.
Punjab were asked to bat first and started with momentum. Priyansh Arya made 27 and Prabhsimran Singh contributed 57, and the two stitched together a 50-run partnership off 33 deliveries. That early foundation carried Punjab beyond the 100-run threshold in the 12th over, helped by a second push forward that featured a 57-run stand between Prabhsimran and Cooper Connolly.
Just as Punjab looked set to accelerate, Mumbai struck back sharply. Shardul Thakur delivered the breakthrough spell, finishing with four wickets for 39 runs. He removed Prabhsimran and then struck again by dismissing captain Shreyas Iyer for 4 within three balls, swinging the momentum firmly towards Mumbai.
Even after the late jolts, Punjab still found a way to post a defendable total. They ended at 200 for 8, scoring 53 runs in the final three overs to keep the contest alive. Azmatullah Omarzai struck 38 off 17 balls, while Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett contributed with late hitting to lift the innings.
Mumbai’s chase was powered by Ryan Rickelton. He smashed 48 from 23 balls, including four fours and four sixes, giving the visitors a platform to chase quickly. Punjab responded with pressure through Yuzvendra Chahal, who brought Mumbai back to 89 for 3, but the pursuit needed someone to steady the chase.
That stabiliser was Tilak Varma. He remained unbeaten on 75 off 33 deliveries and, crucially, ensured Mumbai didn’t lose the plot after the early wickets. Tilak first built a 61-run partnership with Sherfane Rutherford, and then saw the chase through with Will Jacks in the closing overs.
With the game in the balance late, Tilak delivered the finishing blows as well. He struck two sixes in the final over and sealed the win with one ball remaining, completing Mumbai’s successful chase of 201.
Shreyas Iyer’s tough IPL record
The defeat also added to Shreyas Iyer’s individual record when defending 200-plus scores in the IPL. As captain, he has now lost seven such matches in the league. Across 20 IPL games where his side posted 200 or more batting first, the record reads 12 wins, seven losses and one no result.
No other IPL captain has suffered more than five defeats in those 200-plus defenses, and only Faf du Plessis has endured as many setbacks across all T20 cricket. For Punjab, the result was therefore doubly costly—both in the standings and in the franchise’s wider history of near-impossible defenses.
