Ponting Traces PBKS Collapse to KKR Washout as IPL 2026 Playoff Hopes Fade

Ricky Ponting has pointed to a washed-out game against Kolkata Knight Riders as the turning point behind Punjab Kings’ recent slide, a run that has left them clinging to their hopes of making the IPL 2026 playoffs. Punjab Kings, who started the campaign with real authority, now find themselves in fifth place in the standings on 13 points, led by Shreyas Iyer. Their position is precarious because the teams above them are still in play and the margin for error has narrowed sharply in the closing stages.

At one stage, Punjab looked set for a top finish, but the momentum has fizzled out. They have now lost six matches in a row and, with their final league outing scheduled for Saturday, they must beat Lucknow Super Giants to keep their qualification in the frame. Should Punjab Kings defeat LSG, they would end on 15 points. However, even that would not automatically guarantee a spot in the playoffs, because Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders can still potentially finish above or level with them depending on outcomes elsewhere. Rajasthan Royals can reach 16 points to secure qualification, while Kolkata Knight Riders can also finish on 15—at which point net run rate would become the deciding factor. If Punjab Kings fail to get past Lucknow Super Giants, their campaign would end there.

Explaining how that abandoned fixture against KKR disrupted the team’s rhythm, Ponting said Punjab were at their best early in the season, describing their initial run as exceptional. He added that once the washout occurred, the side appeared to lose its sharpness, suggesting that small margins—one or two moments in an over or a couple of balls swinging the outcome—could easily have turned several matches in their favour. Instead, Punjab have had to live with the consequences of those fine margins not going their way.

Ponting also underlined that the task now is about focusing on what the best version of their cricket looks like, and then executing that plan from the first ball. He stressed that being in their current situation is a result of not performing at their highest level in recent weeks, but insisted that they know exactly what their top form requires. With the must-win match approaching, his message was clear: concentrate on the steps needed to win on Saturday and nothing else.

For Lucknow Super Giants, the equation is different. The side is already out of playoff contention, meaning there is no longer a results-based pressure hanging over them. With that freedom comes a different kind of threat—Ponting warned that teams without anything to lose can play with a fearless edge. He noted that Lucknow have won three of their last four matches, adding another layer of difficulty for Punjab Kings as they prepare for a high-stakes encounter.

“Apart from probably personal pride and pride for the franchise’s performance,” Ponting said, highlighting what will drive LSG in the final league game. He suggested that while the standings may not offer motivation, pride and momentum can still fuel aggressive cricket. Ponting concluded by telling his players that they must respond in the same spirit—playing with confidence, taking the game on, and not being held back by concern about negative scenarios. For Punjab Kings, the washed-out match may have started the slump, but Saturday offers the chance to arrest it—if they can deliver their best cricket against Lucknow Super Giants.
