RCB Star Rejects Comparisons, Praises Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Early Impact

Cricket’s constant fascination with the next wave of talent is back in focus, with attention now turning to two batters whose IPL journeys are gathering real momentum. While the wider sporting world marvels at Lamine Yamal’s rise, Indian fans are watching Vaibhav Sooryavanshi make early waves of his own—already turning heads with power, timing, and fearless intent.

Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old batter from Bihar, has been a standout for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League 2026. With a clear attacking mindset from the first overs, he has shown a high level of skill for someone so young, and the buzz around his ceiling has only grown as the tournament progresses.

Quick facts

  • Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is a 15-year-old Indian batter from Bihar playing for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026.
  • He has scored 579 runs so far at a strike rate of nearly 240 and is in contention for the Orange Cap.
  • Devdutt Padikkal is a 25-year-old top-order batter for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
  • Padikkal has one of his best IPL seasons after a strong 2025-26 domestic campaign for Karnataka.
  • Padikkal returned to the Indian Test squad for a one-off Test against Afghanistan in early June following IPL 2026.
  • Padikkal scored 412 runs in IPL 2026, including three half-centuries in 12 innings.

Sooryavanshi’s output has been hard to ignore: 579 runs at a strike rate close to 240, and in only his second IPL season. That combination—big runs and rapid scoring—has put him in the conversation for the Orange Cap, and it has drawn admiration from both past greats and active players.

One of the latest to publicly highlight his impact is Devdutt Padikkal. The Bengaluru batter, who is enjoying one of his best seasons in the competition, has credited his own form to a productive 2025-26 domestic spell with Karnataka, before earning a Test opportunity. After IPL 2026 ended, Padikkal was recalled to the Indian Test squad for a single match against Afghanistan, scheduled for early June.

Padikkal on what makes Sooryavanshi special

In a recent conversation, Padikkal was asked what sets Sooryavanshi apart. He pointed specifically to the ease with which the youngster generates raw power at the top level, describing how Sooryavanshi handles pace—regularly facing deliveries above 140 kph—and still finds the boundary, repeatedly clearing it for sixes.

Padikkal also cautioned against trying to compare or copy him. He said that attempting to replicate Sooryavanshi’s approach would be foolish, adding that he prefers to remain focused on his own strengths rather than making changes based on another player’s style. Instead, the message was to keep things simple: improve his own game and let results follow.

“What Vaibhav Suryavanshi does is truly unique. At his age, to have that kind of power and explosiveness in his batting is special. Honestly, it would be foolish for anyone to try to copy him. He is a rare talent, and what he does is incredible,” Padikkal said during the interaction with JioStar.

He continued: “For me, I focus on my own strengths and try to get the best out of myself. I don’t compare myself with others because there are so many talented players in this tournament. I keep it simple and work on improving my own game as much as I can.”

Even with both batters delivering strongly in IPL 2026, their styles are noticeably different. Padikkal’s stance underlined a bigger theme inside the Indian batting group: learning is valuable, but self-improvement matters most—especially when one player’s aggressive, fearless intent could tempt others to chase the same blueprint.

Why Padikkal’s season has stood out

Padikkal’s rise in IPL 2026 has been built around control and adaptability. He has shown the ability to anchor an innings, switch gears based on match situations, and keep the run rate moving in line with the demands of modern T20 cricket.

So far, he has collected 412 runs, including three half-centuries in 12 innings. The runs also represent a meaningful return for RCB, as Padikkal came back into the setup in 2025 after earlier short stints with Lucknow Super Giants and Rajasthan Royals, where he couldn’t recreate the numbers from his breakthrough IPL 2020 season. In that debut campaign for RCB, he made 473 runs.

With both left-handed batters making their mark, their mutual recognition of each other’s roles and strengths adds another layer to the tournament’s story. It points to a healthier competitive spirit within the Indian set-up, while also reinforcing the confidence that the future of Indian cricket is being shaped by players already thriving under pressure.
