Royal Challengers Bengaluru will take on Chennai Super Kings in their IPL 2026 match on Sunday at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Coming off a strong start that saw them beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets, the defending champions will be eager to make it two wins in a row. The spotlight, though, will also be on RCB fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who is on the cusp of an historic landmark.
Bhuvneshwar enters the contest with 199 wickets from 191 IPL appearances, meaning a single wicket would put him in the 200-wicket club. If he reaches the milestone, he will become only the second bowler in IPL history to do so and the first genuine pace bowler to cross 200 wickets in the competition. At present, Yuzvendra Chahal remains the only player with over 200 wickets in the IPL, having taken 224 wickets in 176 matches.
Earlier in his career, Bhuvneshwar was primarily recognised as a swing bowler and a specialist in the powerplay. Over time, his game has broadened considerably. Even as he continues to trouble batters with the new ball, his growth into a dependable death-overs option has given RCB another strategic weapon in the final overs. His T20 skill set is now built around a range of variations, including the knuckleball, as well as accurate yorkers that can consistently change the rhythm of an innings.
Last season, Bhuvneshwar played a key supporting role in RCB’s title-winning campaign. While Josh Hazlewood often drew the headlines, Bhuvneshwar went about his work with quiet efficiency, collecting 17 wickets in 14 matches. His performances in the death overs were especially noteworthy, where he picked up seven wickets, including a decisive burst in the final against Punjab Kings.
With Hazlewood not available at the start of the current season, Bhuvneshwar has taken on a more prominent responsibility as RCB’s leading bowler. He delivered right away in the opening match versus Sunrisers Hyderabad, conceding only 31 runs in his four overs. Importantly, his spell impact was felt in both phases—he managed the powerplay and also performed in the later stages of the innings.
