Riyan Parag Admits RR Were Too Late to Seal IPL 2026 Playoff Spot

Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag believes his side should have secured a spot in the IPL 2026 playoffs well before the last round of league matches. Heading into their final fixture against the Mumbai Indians, RR had to win to claim the last available berth. A loss would have meant missing out entirely, placing the contest under maximum pressure from the first ball to the last. In the end, Jofra Archer turned out to be the decisive factor, delivering a three-wicket haul and also making meaningful contributions with the bat as Rajasthan Royals beat Mumbai Indians by 30 runs.

RR’s batting order looked shaky in the first innings, and Archer was promoted to No. 7 at a time when momentum was hard to find. The move paid off quickly. Archer struck a rapid 32 off 15 deliveries, helping RR reach 205/8 in their 20 overs. His innings included three sixes and a four, adding the kind of acceleration RR needed as wickets continued to fall around him.

With Mumbai needing 206 runs to win, Archer again emerged when the match demanded it most. He struck early, dismissing opener Rohit Sharma for a duck off just four balls in the opening over. He then followed up with two more key breakthroughs, removing Naman Dhir for 6 and Hardik Pandya for 34, disrupting the build-up that Mumbai required to mount a comeback.

After the match, Parag highlighted both the satisfaction of achieving the result and the areas the team still needs to improve. He said, “Obviously it’s good when things go to plan. I know we’ve won the game, we’ve qualified, but a lot of areas that we can do better.”

Parag also explained the thinking behind Archer’s higher promotion in the batting order and the decision to send Ravindra Jadeja down to No. 9. In his words, the Royals wanted the settled batter to stay at the crease for longer. Parag added that the situation required runs, and in that kind of phase you cannot have two batters in the middle simply working at a run-a-ball pace. He said the intention was to give one player the freedom to take the initiative and accept the risk, while the other could remain in for longer. Parag further remarked that the campaign has involved several brave calls, and that is exactly the style he prefers when captaincy decisions have to be made under pressure.

Archer’s dismissal of Hardik Pandya stood out as particularly crucial, because the MI batter was beginning to find rhythm while building a partnership with Suryakumar Yadav. Mumbai were pushing for a fightback, and breaking that stand was a major turning point. Archer later said he felt the matchup demanded a specific solution, adding that there is “only one guy” who can get Hardik out, and that it was him. He also noted that while it is tough, he credited the work done by the team and mentioned he does not usually heap praise on opponents so they don’t get the chance to gloat.

Parag and Jadeja also returned to the playing XI in RR’s final league outing, with Parag clarifying that Jadeja was not fully fit but was present due to mental toughness. He said Jofra Archer was fine and strong, while Jadeja had a few niggles here and there. Parag concluded by pointing out that the Royals should have qualified earlier rather than leaving it late, adding that the side will look to learn from their games as the season moves forward.
