Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag did not hold back after a disappointing Indian Premier League 2026 outing against the Delhi Capitals on Sunday, using the post-match presentation to air his frustration with the team’s overall show. The result proved costly for RR, marking their fourth loss in their last five matches and denying them a chance to climb to fourth place on the points table. When Parag was asked about the team’s batting, bowling and fielding, his response was blunt: he said the players were “not up to the mark,” and warned that if performances like this continue, the side should not even be in the hunt for the top four.
With the defeat against Delhi, Rajasthan now find themselves in a must-win situation in their final two matches if they want to keep their IPL 2026 playoff hopes alive. RR are currently placed fifth, having won six matches and lost six, and the skipper made it clear that the margin for error has vanished. Asked by presenter Harsha Bhogle where the innings went wrong, Parag pointed to a failure to capitalise at a crucial stage. He said Rajasthan looked well positioned after 14 overs, but once he was dismissed, the momentum slipped away. In his view, the total required should have been in the 220 to 230 range, and he also took aim at the bowling and fielding, calling the effort “very poor” and insisting the squad must raise its standards if it wants to compete for major silverware every season.
Parag also addressed specific tactical choices in the bowling. He explained that Ferreira was not meant to be a risky option, even if it might appear that way on television, and referenced the left-right batting combinations Delhi had. However, he said the plan did not deliver and the outcome reflected that. Looking at the bigger picture, he added that while he believes the team is stronger than what it has shown across the past four to five games, the match against Delhi exposed shortcomings in energy, skill and execution after a break. He reiterated that continuing in this manner would mean the team cannot realistically expect to be in contention for the top four.
The Royals captain’s remarks extended beyond tactics into responsibility. He said RR’s bowling and fielding were below par and that the overall energy, execution and skill levels were not up to standard. Parag further suggested that the side has underperformed in recent matches, and if Rajasthan fail to qualify for the top four, it would be entirely down to them. Harsha Bhogle reminded him that the team still has a pathway to the playoffs if they win their next two games, but Parag appeared more concerned with the fact that Rajasthan are now relying on circumstances beyond their control, after not making the most of their own chances.
Speaking in the same direct tone, he said the situation should not be framed around other teams needing to lose. Parag said that is not how he prefers to lead or communicate with his players, and stressed that the opportunity was there and Rajasthan did not take it. If they miss out on qualification, he insisted it would be their fault, not anyone else’s. He concluded by saying that the next two games will reveal what improvements the team can make, and that they must produce two wins to stay alive.
On the field, Delhi chased down the target of 194 set by Rajasthan with a confident start. Abishek Porel struck 51 off 31 and KL Rahul made 56 off 42 as the opening stand carried the chase, putting on 105 runs together and taking the Capitals to 72 without loss in the powerplay. After a brief wobble in the middle overs, Axar Patel stepped forward with a decisive cameo, scoring 34 off 18 balls to steer the chase home with four balls to spare.
Earlier, Rajasthan had reached 193 for 8, with Dhruv Jurel contributing 53 and Riyan Parag adding 51. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also impressed, striking 46 off 21 balls to provide a quick burst of momentum. But despite those contributions, Parag’s post-match assessment made it clear he felt the team fell short in execution across phases, leaving them to face a tense closing stretch in the league season.
