Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been included in India’s ODI squad for the forthcoming Afghanistan tour, with the BCCI also unveiling the teams for a one-off Test and a three-match ODI series scheduled for June. The selection comes with some notable changes: Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja have been rested for both the longer and the limited-overs assignments, while wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has not been picked for the ODI leg.
Rohit’s presence in the ODI group, alongside Hardik Pandya’s, is linked to fitness clearance, meaning their final availability will depend on how they progress physically ahead of the series. Shubman Gill has been named to lead India across both formats, and the tour is also being framed as part of the squad’s wider preparation for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
Gill will captain the one-off Test as well as the ODI matches, with KL Rahul appointed vice-captain for the Test. In the Test squad, India has mixed established options with newer selections, including Gurnoor Brar, Harsh Dubey and Manav Suthar.
The ODI group continues that blend, with Prince Yadav earning his maiden call-up to India’s national side. The ODI squad also features senior names such as Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, the latter named as vice-captain, along with KL Rahul as the other key senior presence. Alongside them are players like Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya and a number of bowling and all-round options that give India flexibility across conditions.
India’s schedule begins with a one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh, starting June 6, before the ODI series gets underway in Dharamsala on June 14. The final two ODIs are set for Lucknow on June 17 and Chennai on June 20.
