Rohit Sharma Ruled Out of MI Net Session After Hamstring Scare vs RCB

Rohit Sharma sent a tense message to Mumbai Indians supporters during their defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, limping off the field after tweaking his hamstring and being forced to retire hurt. The India opener has since been ruled out of MI’s most recent training session, leaving his availability for the next fixture against Punjab Kings in doubt.

Rohit also missed the practice session, and his hamstring issue is expected to be monitored closely ahead of the April 16 meeting. Even so, Cricbuzz reported that the injury is not viewed as something that will keep him out for long. The update from the report said scans carried out on Sunday night did not show conclusive signs of a tear, which eases the biggest fear for a batter who is set to turn 39 within the next couple of weeks.

For Rohit’s fans, the hope is that this is at most a strain rather than anything more serious. The veteran has built a relatively clean injury record late in his career, and the latest concern is being treated cautiously. In the game at the Wankhede Stadium, Rohit had made 19 not out before being replaced by Suryakumar Yadav. Despite a solid start to the campaign, he hadn’t looked fully fluent in that innings.

MI’s options if Rohit is unavailable

If Rohit does miss the upcoming clash, it could add another layer of pressure on a Mumbai side that has struggled to gather momentum early in the season. One of MI’s key strengths has been the opening partnership Rohit formed with Ryan Rickelton, and disrupting that combination could affect both the runs they score and the authority they show at the top of the order.

With Rohit potentially out, Quinton de Kock is the closest like-for-like alternative, given his experience. However, bringing him into the playing XI would likely mean using an overseas spot lower in the batting order, which could change MI’s balance. The bigger issue for the franchise has been the inconsistency in the middle—Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya have not been firing consistently, leaving MI less dangerous than their squad composition suggests on paper.

Rohit’s hamstring scare was not the only concern raised by the MI vs RCB contest. Virat Kohli was also reported to have been sidelined during the second innings after suffering an ankle injury. Still, Krunal Pandya, speaking after the match, said Kohli was fit and did not indicate any worry around the star batter’s participation going forward.

MI supporters will be hoping Rohit’s absence from the nets is simply precautionary and that he can return in time for the next match. But there remains a possibility the team prioritises complete recovery, allowing their former captain extra time to rest and heal before taking the field again.
