Rossouw Says IPL Feels More Like Bollywood Entertainment Than Cricket

South African batter Rillie Rossouw has sparked a talking point in franchise cricket by drawing a surprising comparison between the Pakistan Super League and the Indian Premier League, suggesting the IPL feels more like entertainment than pure competition. Rossouw said the IPL carries a different atmosphere from the PSL, noting the presence of Bollywood as a major factor in how the tournament is perceived. “The IPL obviously has the whole Bollywood behind it, so it’s a lot more of a movie than actual cricket. So both of them have their pros and cons,” Rossouw said, framing the difference as a matter of style and surroundings rather than quality alone.

Rossouw’s remarks also came shortly after a standout match where he was named Player of the Match following Quetta Gladiators’ 61-run victory over Rawalpindiz in Karachi on Friday. The win arrived in the 18th fixture of the HBL Pakistan Super League at the National Bank Stadium, with Quetta putting together a dominant performance in both departments—batting with intent and then backing it up with the ball to control the chase.

Chasing a target of 183, Rawalpindiz were held to 121 in 17.3 overs, suffering their fifth consecutive defeat in the tournament. Quetta’s bowlers delivered the crucial breakthroughs, and the innings was trimmed by two-wicket hauls from Saud Shakeel, Jahandad Khan and Usman Tariq, who shared the burden of restricting the opposition before the chase could gather momentum.

Rossouw’s comments landed in a wider context of growing confidence around the PSL’s global ambitions. The batter spoke just days after PSL chief Mohsin Naqvi suggested that the league is moving toward becoming the top franchise competition in the world. Addressing a meeting of the Pakistan Cricket Board Board of Governors, Naqvi argued that the PSL has evolved into an attractive platform for investment and is well-positioned to keep expanding.

“The PSL has now become the best market for investment,” Naqvi said, adding that the league is on course to reach the very top. “The time is not far when the PSL will become the world’s number one league,” he added.
