RR’s Sooryavanshi and Archer Aim to Silence Aggressive SRH in Eliminator

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s fearless mindset—at just 15 years old—will be tested against the combined punch of an aggressive top order when a rejuvenated Rajasthan Royals side takes on Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League Eliminator at Mullanpur on Wednesday. Rajasthan, after a dip earlier in the campaign, have found momentum and now arrive at the do-or-die stage with real intent, while Sunrisers also gathered steam as the league stage progressed. Hyderabad started slowly, but their fortunes improved significantly in the second half, with Pat Cummins stepping in as the regular captain for the final seven league matches. In that stretch, they won five games, turning pressure into momentum.

After defeating Rajasthan Royals twice in the league stage, Cummins and his group will head into this knockout match with an edge in confidence. For Rajasthan, that advantage is balanced by urgency: the franchise itself acknowledged that it should have secured a play-off spot earlier than the final day of the league phase. Now that they are there, the Riyan Parag-led unit will be eager to deliver a statement win over Sunrisers Hyderabad and move further into the tournament.

Rajasthan’s batting engine is heavily driven by its top order, with Sooryavanshi leading the way on 583 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal has contributed 397, while Dhruv Jurel has amassed 458, and together they have provided the majority of the team’s run supply. The same pattern is visible for Sunrisers, where Abhishek Sharma has scored 563 runs, Travis Head has 393, and Ishan Kishan has piled up 569 runs. At number four, Henrich Klaasen’s role deserves special attention as he is in the middle of one of his strongest IPL seasons, having collected 606 runs.

Even with such destructive firepower at the top of both line-ups, Jaiswal and Head have not always delivered with the consistency they would have wanted. The Eliminator therefore becomes a crucial platform for their teams—an opportunity to swing momentum with one decisive, game-changing performance.

Sunrisers are widely viewed as among the most dangerous sides in the competition, which is why Rajasthan head coach Kumar Sangakkara was asked how they plan to manage the opposition’s aggressive top four. He responded that the challenge is not simply about restricting totals to a certain number, but about staying disciplined and being intentional with bowling plans.

“They’re a good side, aren’t they? They bat well. They trust themselves to go hard and they’ve done it the whole tournament. We have got to hold the line, really. Be disciplined and understand that they’re not a side that you’re going to limit to 120, 130. But we’ve got to be aggressive (with our) lines and lengths. Even if you’re trying to bowl a good length ball, or a slower ball, it has to be bowled with intent. With the Sunrisers, yeah, it’s going to be a tough clash for us. Let’s see in two days’ time what we come up with,” Sangakkara said after ensuring qualification for the play-offs.

With the ball, Rajasthan will be looking for another defining spell from their leading wicket-taker Jofra Archer, who has taken 21 wickets. The expectation is that he can impact the contest early—particularly in the powerplay—much like he did in the must-win meeting against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede, when he made the ball talk using both conventional movement and cross-seam variation.

Nandre Burger and Brijesh Sharma have also shown they can trouble batters in segments, operating effectively across different phases of the match. Meanwhile, Yash Raj Punja has emerged as the main spinner for Rajasthan, ahead of Ravi Bishnoi, in his debut IPL season. Even so, veteran Ravindra Jadeja still needs to add more impact with both bat and ball if Rajasthan are to control the tempo.

At the top of the order, the spotlight is on Sooryavanshi to set the tone without fear—even against players like Cummins, leading wicket-taker Eshan Malinga (19 wickets), and Sakib Hussain. If the teenager gets off the mark quickly during the powerplay, he has every chance to tilt the match in Rajasthan’s favour.

Sunrisers, too, have options in the middle overs, with another wrist spinner in their rookie group—Shivang Kumar—having made his presence felt for them during those crucial phases.

Mullanpur Stadium has been a favourable venue for batting this season, having hosted four league matches. In three of those games, totals of 220 or more were posted, including Punjab Kings’ 254 at home.
