Ruturaj Gaikwad has been brought back into India A colours after being named in the touring party for an upcoming tri-series in Sri Lanka. The right-handed batter has been drafted in as cover for Riyan Parag, who has been ruled out due to a hamstring problem. Parag will now spend time in rehabilitation under the guidance of the BCCI Centre of Excellence, clearing the way for Gaikwad to re-enter the A-team setup.
For Gaikwad, the call-up arrives at an important moment as he looks to arrest the momentum after a tough IPL 2026. Even though he led the Chennai Super Kings as an opener, he was unable to consistently deliver the kind of performances associated with him. In the league phase, he managed 337 runs at an average of 28.08 while striking at 123.44, a return that fell short of the impact expected from a top-order leader. With India A offering a fresh stage, the tour becomes a chance to rebuild confidence quickly and show selectors that the form curve can move back in the right direction.
India A selectors have signalled their belief in Gaikwad not only by including him in the squad but also by assigning him the role of vice-captain alongside captain Tilak Varma. That leadership responsibility adds another dimension to his assignment, because it provides him with an avenue to contribute beyond scoring—by setting the tone for the batting group and demonstrating he can anchor innings under pressure.
India A tri-series squad and schedule
The updated India A squad for the tri-series is: Tilak Varma (captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad (vice-captain), Priyansh Arya, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ayush Badoni, Nishant Sindhu, Suryansh Shedge, Prabhsimran Singh (WK), Kumar Kushagra (WK), Vipraj Nigam, Yash Thakur, Yudhvir Singh, Anshul Kamboj, Arshad Khan, Anukul Roy.
The tri-series will involve India A, Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A. All of the white-ball matches are scheduled to be played in Dambulla, after which the tour moves to Galle for two multi-day encounters against Sri Lanka A. The teams for the red-ball fixtures will be announced separately, meaning the current squad will have a clear opportunity to stake claims during the limited-overs phase before the longer format arrangements are confirmed.
With Gaikwad, the significance of this tour goes beyond simply fulfilling another India A commitment. After a lean IPL outing, the assignment offers a platform to rediscover rhythm, take charge in the middle and translate his batting talent into consistent performances. For a player aiming to push his case for future national-team opportunities, time in the middle—especially in a leadership role—can be the difference between fading from contention and reasserting himself among India’s most promising batting prospects.
