Arjun Tendulkar finally got his IPL 2026 breakthrough on Saturday when Lucknow Super Giants hosted Punjab Kings. The franchise suffered yet another defeat, but Tendulkar still marked his league debut with a wicket — a moment that clearly meant a lot to his father, Sachin Tendulkar, who shared an emotional message afterwards.
Long wait on the bench: the pressure few see
For fans watching from the stands, match-day intensity is the most visible part of cricket. What often goes unnoticed, though, is the mental toughness needed during a long season, especially for players who spend most of their time warming the bench.
In the IPL, each franchise builds a squad of 25. In practice, however, most teams end up revolving around a core of roughly 14 to 15 players. That means close to 40% of the squad typically waits for an opening — relying on hope as they keep showing up to the nets, training hard, and staying ready for the single chance that can change everything.
Arjun’s journey to debut and Sachin’s tribute
Arjun is no stranger to waiting. During his four seasons with Mumbai Indians from 2022 to 2025, he appeared in just five matches. With Lucknow, his first campaign looked like it might follow the same pattern — until opportunity arrived in the final game of the season.
Lucknow had already been ruled out of playoff contention more than a week earlier, and the team management decided to test their bench depth. That decision led to Arjun being handed his debut against Punjab Kings.
But beyond the wicket, it was Arjun’s patience and mindset that stood out enough to draw praise from Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin wrote on X: “Well done, Arjun. Proud of the way you’ve carried yourself through this season, always believing in your ability, staying patient, working hard quietly, and remaining positive despite having to wait for your opportunity till the very last match. Cricket tests patience as much as skill, and you handled both beautifully today. Keep your feet on the ground, and continue being in love with the game like you always have. Love you always.”
The post was also Sachin’s first public comment about Arjun’s cricket journey since 2023, when Arjun made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians.
How Arjun fared against PBKS
Arjun, a left-arm pace bowler, was brought into the attack right after the powerplay by captain Rishabh Pant and made an immediate impression. He bowled a sharp bouncer to Prabhsimran Singh that produced a top edge, sending the ball to the wicketkeeper — only for the chance to be dropped. Even after that missed wicket, Arjun stayed steady and conceded just four runs in the over.
In his second over, Prabhsimran and Shreyas Iyer took the initiative, smashing 15 runs, including two boundaries and a six. Arjun later returned in the 15th over when both batters had moved past their fifties and Punjab were moving comfortably in the chase.
Iyer struck back with consecutive boundaries, but Arjun responded with a vicious yorker that trapped Prabhsimran plumb in front of the stumps.
Arjun then rounded off his spell with his final over, giving away only five runs to finish with figures of 1 for 36.
Match outcome: LSG’s defeat leaves them at the foot
Despite Arjun’s debut wicket and his overall impact with the ball, Lucknow Super Giants still lost the game. It was their 10th defeat of the season, and the team finished at the bottom of the table.
