Samson’s 115* and Overton’s burst power CSK to maiden IPL 2026 win vs DC

Sanju Samson produced a statement knock as Chennai Super Kings secured their inaugural victory of IPL 2026 on Saturday night at the Chepauk, beating Delhi Capitals by 23 runs. Samson struck an unbeaten 115 and Jamie Overton backed it up with a devastating four-wicket burst, helping CSK turn around their fortunes with a performance that combined composure at the top and ruthless control in the middle. After a quiet stretch in earlier matches, Samson took charge from the first ball, building pressure while the bowlers—led by Overton—finished the job in convincing fashion.

Chasing a target after losing the toss, CSK made their way to a strong total of 212/2, with the innings steered by a dominant 113-run partnership between Samson and Ayush Mhatre. Mhatre contributed a brisk 59, keeping the scoreboard moving and showing an eye for timing as boundaries came at regular intervals. Even so, Samson remained the anchor, accelerating precisely when the field and bowling plans shifted. He reached his century in 52 deliveries—his fourth IPL hundred—and the imperious knock continued even after a dropped chance on 55, as he punished Delhi’s hesitations with a commanding display. The right-hander looked far more at ease than in CSK’s earlier outings, finding the middle of the bat consistently and selecting shots across the ground. His innings included an especially memorable six that cleared the extra-cover region, underscoring how he was able to lift the pressure whenever Delhi tried to steady things.

Mhatre’s promising effort eventually ended when he was retired out, opening the door for a late push from Shivam Dube. With the platform already secure at the top, CSK’s batting gave their bowlers a cushion, and that advantage proved decisive as the innings progressed.

Delhi’s chase starts quickly, but CSK tighten the screws

Delhi Capitals began their chase with intent as Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul tore into the opening overs. The duo raced beyond the 50-mark in just four overs, with Nissanka smashing 41 off 18 balls and Rahul looking smooth in his strokeplay before he was dismissed by Khaleel Ahmed. By 5 overs, Delhi were 61/1 and appeared to be in command of the chase.

That momentum did not last. Anshul Kamboj struck to remove Nissanka, and then debutant Gurjapneet Singh made an immediate impact by taking Axar Patel with his very first delivery. With the required run rate climbing, Jamie Overton took over the key phase, dismissing Sameer Rizvi to rattle Delhi’s middle order. Tristan Stubbs tried to keep the chase alive, playing a fighting 60 off 38 balls, and he formed a short 45-run partnership with David Miller that steadied the situation for a moment. Overton then struck again to send Miller back, tightening CSK’s control and forcing Delhi into damage limitation.

A brief burst from Ashutosh Sharma—quickly scoring 19—threatened to swing the momentum back toward Delhi, but Noor Ahmad removed him at a crucial stage. Overton continued to apply pressure, accounting for Auqib Nabi as Delhi’s wickets kept falling at regular intervals. When the required rate spiked, Stubbs eventually departed in the 19th over, caught off Overton, which effectively ended Delhi’s chances of chasing down the total. Kamboj then finished the tail, dismissing Kuldeep Yadav and Lungi Ngidi, as Delhi were bowled out for 189.

CSK’s win was built on an all-round display, with Overton’s wicket haul standing out and the fielding providing sharp support throughout. The result also brought an end to a six-match losing run at Chepauk, giving CSK a much-needed boost in IPL 2026.
