Sangakkara on RR’s IPL 2026 push: “We don’t pick age” after playoff seal vs MI

NEW DELHI: The pressure was etched on Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara’s face throughout the Royals’ must-win IPL 2026 encounter against Mumbai Indians at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. He stayed locked into his seat until the final delivery, repeatedly dabbing sweat with a towel and showing barely any emotion as the match unfolded. But once the last ball was played and Rajasthan Royals secured their place in the playoffs with a 30-run victory over Mumbai Indians, Sangakkara’s body language changed instantly—he rose, applauded his players, and exchanged handshakes with members of the support staff and squad.

With Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders caught in intricate qualification formulas involving net run-rate calculations, Rajasthan Royals had a far simpler equation: win the game and book a spot in the postseason. The side delivered when it mattered most, sealing the fourth and final playoff spot in style, powered by Jofra Archer’s standout all-round display.

“During the last timeout, it was about sticking to the plan and keeping your nerve. At the back end, it comes down to who reacts better under pressure. Every bowler did a brilliant job, and on the field we were quite sharp. There’s always guesswork, isn’t there—especially when you’re promoting someone while batting. When it works, it’s fantastic, and when it doesn’t, it can look pretty ugly,” Sangakkara said after the win.

Jofra Archer shines with bat and ball

Archer’s impact began with the bat, where he struck 32 runs off only 15 balls to help Rajasthan Royals reach 205 for eight. The England pacer hit three sixes and a four in a rapid cameo that shifted the momentum in the innings.

He then carried that influence into the bowling innings, producing an excellent spell that returned figures of 4-0-17-3. His all-round contribution earned him the Player of the Match award.

“We know what Jofra can do with the bat. We wanted him to take a bit of risk. After that, we asked Ferreira and Dubey to handle the later overs once the bowlers were getting tired out there in the sun. Unfortunately Donovan got out, but Jofra kept going, and then Jaddu, coming in at the end with a bandaged elbow, helped us get over the line,” Sangakkara explained.

“When we were at the point of thinking only around 180, getting to 206 was a fantastic effort. He’s been like this in every single game—really invested in the team, helping everyone. He’s been our spearhead from the start, and I’m genuinely proud of him,” the coach added.

Sangakkara praises young spinner Yash

Sangakkara also singled out young spinner Yash Raj Punja for praise, highlighting his performance against a strong Mumbai Indians batting unit. Punja finished with figures of 2/44.

“Yash has been an interesting choice for us. He’s tall, generates good revs, and he turns his leg-break along with his googly. Yes, it’s a good wicket to bat on, but the way he bowled to those experienced batters was outstanding. We don’t select based on age—we select based on ability,” Sangakkara said.

Rajasthan Royals will now take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator of IPL 2026 on May 27. The match is scheduled at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.
