Pressure at the start of IPL 2026 can be unforgiving, and for Sanju Samson it arrived early—along with three single-digit scores that quickly raised the stakes. The Chennai Super Kings wicketkeeper-batter, however, answered the noise in the most emphatic way possible when it mattered most, delivering a match-defining knock against Delhi Capitals.
Samson produced an unbeaten 115 off just 56 balls, smashing 15 boundaries and clearing the ropes four times. His strike rate of 205.36 underlined how completely he controlled the chase, and the innings proved decisive as CSK recorded their first victory of the campaign after losing their first three matches in a row. The century was also a landmark for IPL 2026, becoming the tournament’s first hundred of the season.
Joining CSK after spending the previous year with Rajasthan Royals, Samson’s innings marked a clear reversal of fortune. After a slow opening phase in the tournament, he showed what he can do when the timing clicks and the momentum is allowed to grow. The knock also carried a special stat: Samson became the first wicketkeeper-batter to score a century for Chennai in IPL history. It further placed him alongside KL Rahul as the only players to have registered hundreds for three different IPL franchises.
Raina’s take: moment, structure and impact
Former India and CSK batter Suresh Raina described the hundred as a turning point for Samson’s season. Speaking on Star Sports, Raina said the pressure should ease now after the landmark score, adding that it is rarely easy to step into a new franchise and perform immediately—especially when expectations are high from day one.
Raina also pointed to how Samson’s role at the top of the order improves CSK’s batting rhythm. In his view, a strong start from the opener allows the middle overs to be played with greater freedom. He referenced CSK’s ability to introduce hitters like Shivam Dube or Ayush Mhatre once the innings is underway, stressing that Samson’s presence makes that transition smoother.
Highlighting the broader team effect, Raina suggested that with Samson batting alongside a partner who appears fully in control of his game, CSK gains the luxury of building pressure rather than chasing stability. He added that Dewald Brevis did not even take the field to bat in the match versus Delhi, which he felt illustrated the difference a well-structured top order can make to the rest of the batting card.
Jamie Overton singled out as the match’s difference
While Samson’s century naturally dominated headlines, Raina reserved particular praise for all-rounder Jamie Overton. He believed Overton could have been named player of the match, arguing that the pacer/bowling all-rounder outwitted every Delhi batter with variations.
Raina emphasised that Overton’s four-wicket haul on a wicket that offered assistance to batters proved the key separation point. In Raina’s assessment, Overton is the type of player who thrives when the game is tight, delivering in high-pressure moments whenever he gets the chance—whether in franchise cricket or while representing England.
Delhi Capitals’ concerns: reliance and collapse
Turning to Delhi Capitals’ performance, Raina expressed worry about how much their batting depended on the contributions of Sameer Rizvi, alongside a middle-order collapse that ultimately left them all out for 189.
Raina said it becomes concerning when a team like DC is repeatedly rescued by a player who is not yet at an international superstar level. While he acknowledged that Rizvi has begun his IPL journey well, he argued that the expectation then shifts toward him to carry leadership duties—something that can be an unnecessary burden for a relatively inexperienced IPL campaigner.
For Raina, the main alarm was what happened in the middle phase of Delhi’s chase. He noted that after the innings was set up neatly by CSK bowlers in the early part of the run chase—particularly after five overs—the Capitals still lost wickets in clusters. In his view, Delhi then surrendered the advantage they had been given, letting the contest slip away despite the platform that CSK had allowed them.
With Samson’s first IPL century of the season and Overton’s decisive spell, CSK’s turnaround began in the best possible fashion, while Delhi will have to quickly address both their reliance on individual bursts and the fragility of their middle-overs batting.
