Sanju Samson’s debut campaign with Chennai Super Kings is turning into a statement of intent, with the wicketkeeper-batter continuing to underline why he has long been regarded as a top-tier T20 operator. In Thursday’s outing at the Wankhede Stadium against Mumbai Indians, Samson struck an IPL century and, more importantly, shaped his innings with the kind of control and game awareness that fans associate with the franchise’s former “Captain Cool” template—playing the situation rather than chasing a script.
Samson’s century and the role of patience
While CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has struggled to get going in the tournament so far, the innings against Mumbai Indians highlighted a different kind of leadership coming from the other end. Gaikwad made a start but again failed to convert it into a substantial score, and with Chennai losing wickets at regular intervals, Samson stepped in as the stabilising force. Instead of trying to force momentum immediately, he paced his knock, dug in when wickets fell, and ensured CSK had a platform late in the innings.
- Samson’s knock stood out as CSK continued to shed wickets while attempting to accelerate at various stages.
- As the match swung toward a need for consolidation, Samson shifted into a settled approach to stay at the crease for the required overs.
- He finished unbeaten with 101 runs, providing Chennai with the backbone it needed.
After the match, Samson elaborated on how he keeps responsibility at the forefront whenever the team is under pressure. He pointed out that losing wickets whenever CSK tried to push the scoring rate made it crucial for him to remain composed and last to the end.
“We actually kept on losing wickets here and there. Whenever we wanted to go big, I think we were losing a few wickets. So, I thought it’s very important for a settled batsman to stay until the end. That’s what I tried, and that’s what happened today. The game tells you what to do. You don’t have to come with a preconceived mindset, and you don’t have to be premeditating, telling yourself this is how I play or this is what I want to do,” Samson said during the post-match presentation ceremony.
He also stressed that his experience helps him prioritise the team’s needs over personal plans. Samson suggested that while a player can have an idea of how they want to bat, the match context dictates the details—especially in a T20 chase or total-building scenario where every wicket changes the demands.
“With the experience I have, the team definitely comes first. You can say ‘this is the way I play’ and that you might get out or you might not, but with the experience and the responsibility shown in me, it is my duty to understand the match situation and what the team demands, putting that first and then planning my game around it,” he added.
Adapting tactics as wickets kept falling
Samson further explained how his plan evolved during the innings. He admitted that he would have preferred a more aggressive tempo earlier, but the steady fall of wickets forced him to adjust. With the innings needing to be closed out properly, his job became less about rapid acceleration and more about ensuring CSK finished strongly.
“As I said, I definitely go in with a very open mindset. But I think if we had kept our wickets, I would have gone a bit earlier. Because of the fall of wickets, it was very important for us to close off the innings really well,” Samson said.
Looking ahead for CSK’s season
With the tournament still moving and CSK building for the long haul, Samson also spoke about the squad’s mindset as the season continues. He described the team as young, praised the attitude and character shown despite setbacks, and said CSK wants to ride the momentum gained from this win while keeping an eye on how quickly each contest demands intensity.
“As we all know, it’s a very young team. But the amount of attitude and character we have shown, even after three losses in this tournament, is really commendable. We would like to just keep going with the momentum we have gained here. But we know that every game is important. Every team plays with great intensity, so we need to be ready and enjoy what’s happening at the moment,” Samson concluded.
