Shardul Thakur’s 4-Wicket Spell Helps PBKS Defeat Mumbai in Dharamsala

Prabhsimran Singh played a smooth half-century, but Shardul Thakur’s sudden four-wicket spell caused a late wobble as Punjab Kings managed a fighting total of 200 for 8 against Mumbai Indians in a key IPL encounter at Dharamsala on Thursday. After arriving at the crease following four straight defeats, PBKS built momentum early through aggressive batting, then weathered a collapse before finishing strongly at the end to keep the contest firmly in reach.

Punjab were asked to bat first and made a lively start with an attacking 50-run partnership off 33 balls between Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran. Arya scored 27, while Prabhsimran struck 57, turning the opening overs into a platform for PBKS. Mumbai Indians were made to pay for chances they failed to take, and that early pressure carried them into the first half of the innings as PBKS raced to 55 for 1 during the powerplay.

From there, Cooper Connolly joined the attack and added 57 more runs alongside Prabhsimran, helping Punjab move beyond the 100-run mark by the 12th over. The innings, however, swung sharply as Mumbai’s fielding and bowling adjustments met the middle overs with more intent.

MI ultimately dropped five catches in the match—an unusually high number for one game—and it proved costly. Deepak Chahar struck the first decisive blow for Mumbai by dismissing Arya in the fifth over, bowling the batter after a delivery that disturbed the top of the off stump.

Stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah also came close to breaking the partnership earlier when Naman Dhir let go of a simple catch after Prabhsimran edged a ball in the second over. Instead of losing a wicket, PBKS gained momentum as Prabhsimran punished Bumrah with two boundaries.

Connolly set the tone for his cameo by hitting spinner Raghu Sharma for the opening six of the innings in the eighth over. He then added two more boundaries off Will Jacks, ensuring the tempo remained high even after Arya’s dismissal.

Prabhsimran soon took full control. He slog-swept Raghu Sharma to send the ball over the ropes twice in the 10th over and also launched Corbin Bosch for a maximum. His acceleration continued as he reached his fifty with a single, before striking another six off Shardul over backward square leg.

That rhythm, though, lasted only briefly. The turning point came when Shardul—who had conceded 15 runs in his initial over—returned to strike twice within three balls, instantly changing the complexion of Punjab’s innings.

First, he removed the well-set Prabhsimran, and then he dismissed captain Shreyas Iyer for 4 as PBKS slipped into trouble. Raj Bawa then contributed by castling Connolly with a cross-seam delivery, and he followed it up by taking a sharp catch at short midwicket to send Suryansh Shedge back off Shardul.

Shashank Singh was trapped lbw by Bosch, while Marco Jansen also departed cheaply. Shardul struck again in the 17th over, leaving Punjab in a deeper bind as wickets kept falling.

Punjab’s response came in the final stretch. They smashed 53 runs in the last three overs, benefiting from MI’s misjudged variations at the death. Azmatullah Omarzai spearheaded the counterattack with 38 off 17 balls, featuring two sixes and a four.

Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett also contributed crucial late runs. Vinod and Bartlett produced 22 runs off Bosch’s final over, supported by sloppy fielding and two dropped catches close to the boundary, as PBKS crossed the 200-run mark for the eighth time in the season.
