Shreyas Iyer delivered another captain’s knock, steering Punjab Kings to a convincing six-wicket triumph over Sunrisers Hyderabad in an IPL game on Saturday. With the ball they looked organised, but it was with the bat that the control truly stood out: Iyer stayed unbeaten on 69 off 33 deliveries as PBKS successfully chased a formidable 220, finishing the job with seven balls still left in the innings. The chase was shaped by two distinct powerplay bursts, and Punjab’s response ultimately proved sharper when it mattered most.
Sunrisers Hyderabad set the tempo from the outset, launching their innings with ruthless intent. They raced to 105 without losing a wicket in the opening six overs, then pushed the momentum further to 120 without loss by 8.1 overs. Abhishek Sharma was the spark at the top, smashing 74 off 28 balls, while Travis Head provided another surge with 38 off 23. Abhishek’s innings was particularly destructive—he struck eight maximums and five fours, reached a 50 in just 18 balls, and repeatedly targeted the bowling, including Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, and the seamers that followed.
Although SRH eventually reached 219 for six, the total didn’t come without a fight from Punjab. The turning point arrived through a decisive double strike by Shashank Singh. When Sunrisers were still cruising along at 120/0, Shashank removed both Abhishek and Head in the same over, jolting the innings right when it looked set to run away. At the other end, Xavier Bartlett helped seal the late overs, conceding only five runs in his final over to keep PBKS’s chase within reach.
Punjab’s reply mirrored the aggression they had faced at the start. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh launched a fierce counterattack, adding 99 runs for the opening wicket and matching the kind of acceleration SRH had produced earlier. PBKS were 93 without loss during the powerplay, putting pressure back on the SRH bowling unit. Priyansh played the more explosive role, hammering a 16-ball fifty and punishing Harshal Patel, Eshan Malinga, and Harsh Dubey in quick succession. Prabhsimran complemented him with a brisk 51 off 25 balls, unfurling six-hitting against Jaydev Unadkat and others as the required rate stayed firmly under control.
Even when the chase briefly wobbled—Shivang Kumar took three wickets, including key breakthroughs in the middle overs—Punjab didn’t lose their footing. With the target always within sight, they remained ahead of the asking rate. At 128/3 in the 11th over, SRH still had a sliver of hope, but Iyer stepped in with authority. He paced the chase with precision, timed the boundaries at regular intervals, kept the strike rate above 200, and ensured there was no late collapse or twist at the end.
Iyer’s unbeaten 69 off 33 ultimately made the difference, as Punjab Kings completed a comfortable finish and clinched another memorable, high-scoring chase.
