NEW DELHI: Shreyas Iyer’s celebrations, the loud applause around him and the visible relief on his face captured the mood after Punjab Kings pulled off a vital win in a must-win IPL 2026 encounter against Lucknow Super Giants. Leading from the front as skipper, Iyer struck a captain’s knock that turned the chase into a statement.
PBKS beat LSG by seven wickets at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Saturday. The decisive factor was Iyer’s magnificent century, which set the tone and ensured Punjab left with the kind of points their campaign demanded.

The win lifted Punjab Kings to 15 points from 14 league games, pulling them back to the fourth spot on the points table. Even so, their path to the playoffs isn’t fully sealed, and the team will now be watching outcomes closely rather than solely relying on their own momentum.
Punjab Kings will keep a close eye on Sunday’s contest between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. With Rajasthan currently on 14 points, a win for RR would take them to 16 and effectively lock in the last playoff spot—at Punjab’s expense.
After the match, Iyer made his position clear when asked about the next fixture. “We support MI tomorrow,” he said, signalling that Punjab will want Mumbai to upset the Rajasthan challenge in order to keep their own playoff hopes alive.
Two milestones and a turning point
Iyer also spoke about the emotional lift of reaching a double milestone against LSG. He marked his maiden IPL century and, at the same time, ensured Punjab remained in the playoff race despite a difficult run of results earlier in the season.
Describing the feeling after the innings, the Player of the Match said he was “ecstatic” to finish the game on a high. “Ecstatic, first hundred of the season, we won eventually after six consecutive losses. I know if I give myself time in the middle and time the ball, rather than getting on top of the ball… I know I need to stay out there for as long as possible,” he explained during the post-match presentation.
He added that the moment felt surreal, noting the mindset and comfort he found while batting. “It’s a surreal feeling, finishing a game and scoring a century. I was in a great mind space, felt super from within,” Iyer said.
Beyond his own knock, Iyer credited Prabhsimran Singh for the momentum created during Punjab’s third-wicket stand. Prabhsimran made 69, and together they stitched a match-winning partnership worth 140 runs.
Speaking about the duo’s rhythm, Iyer praised Prabhsimran’s intent and the quality of communication between the batters. “Prabh was temperamentally active and the communication we had was great. That partnership was crucial, created momentum in the game… seriously elated,” he said.
Iyer also highlighted how the bowling unit played its part by keeping Lucknow to a below-200 total. That control with the ball, he suggested, made the chase manageable and helped Punjab complete the job without losing grip.
Keeping pressure off the group
With a high-stakes match on the schedule, the PBKS skipper revealed the team deliberately chose a calmer approach in the build-up. Instead of adding pressure through heavy strategising sessions, they worked to keep thoughts clear and execution straightforward.
“We just kept it simple, rather than having meetings and putting pressure on the boys. Free flow of mind is required in crucial games. We don’t want to make them overthink, and I told Ricky that we don’t need to do a team meeting,” Iyer said.
Punjab Kings now face the next phase of their campaign with uncertainty still attached to their playoff chances—making Sunday’s RR vs MI clash at the Wankhede Stadium crucial for their hopes. For fans tracking every twist of the season, updates on IPL live scores, the schedule, the points table, and the race for the Orange Cap and Purple Cap remain the key to following the playoff race closely.
