Sooryavanshi Takes on IPL Stars Early, Bishop Questions His Starc Bravery

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already lined up against some of the fastest and most established bowling names in IPL 2026, and he has responded with impressive composure. At just 15 years old, the youngster has gone after Jasprit Bumrah, Josh Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Pat Cummins without appearing to be overawed by their reputations, keeping his focus firmly on the ball rather than the brand of the bowler.

Sooryavanshi’s output so far reads like a statement of intent: 400 runs at an average of 44.44, alongside a strike rate of 238.10. With eight matches still remaining in the season, there is growing interest in how much further he can take this run of dominance.

After turning in match-altering innings against franchises including Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad, Sooryavanshi is set for another major test against Delhi Capitals. Batting at the top of the order, he could be met by the pace of Mitchell Starc right from the first overs.

Starc, the left-arm quick, has recently joined Delhi Capitals following a period of recovery from shoulder and elbow concerns. He has been deemed fit to play, and his timing is significant as DC currently sit in seventh place while continuing their push toward a playoff berth.

The idea of Starc delivering with the new ball against an unflinching 15-year-old has quickly become a talking point. However, former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop believes the matchup will not mirror what Sooryavanshi has faced previously.

“No, I think you have to give Mitchell Starc credit. He’ll come better prepared; he won’t be Jasprit Bumrah,” Bishop said on ESPNCricinfo during a yes-or-no segment when asked whether Sooryavanshi could hit Starc for a first-ball maximum.

Still, Sooryavanshi’s record against left-arm pace hints at a blend of adventurous, boundary-hunting strokeplay and moments of vulnerability when the bowling is tight and well-planned. If Starc is able to settle into his rhythm early, that could create a genuine opening in the contest.

Even so, the teenager has consistently signalled that his only priority is the ball in front of him, not the opponent standing at the other end. With Starc’s reputation for early breakthroughs, it would not be surprising if Sooryavanshi is challenged from the very first over.

That is what makes this clash intriguing: Starc brings experience and swing, while Sooryavanshi brings fearless intent and momentum. At this stage, the duel feels capable of tilting either way, with the new-ball phase likely to set the tone for what follows.
