Pacers Sakib Hussain and Praful Hinge stole the spotlight as Sunrisers Hyderabad cruised to a decisive 57-run win over Rajasthan Royals in their IPL 2026 meeting on Monday. The contest was played at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, where the two debutants produced match-turning bowling spells—each taking four wickets—to help SRH restrict RR to 159 while defending a target of 217. With their impressive performances, Hyderabad handed the Royals their first loss of the season and snapped a four-game winning run.
Sakib’s rise to the IPL has been anything but smooth. The Bihar-born fast bowler grew up in Gopalganj in a household that struggled financially, where his early life was shaped by hardship. His father, Ali Ahmed Hussain, worked as a farmer, but the family’s stability took a hit when Ali suffered a knee injury, leaving them with even less means to make ends meet.
As Sakib’s interest in cricket started to grow, he developed a particular fascination with pace bowling. To keep his cricket dreams alive, he took part in tennis-ball tournaments in his area, where he earned roughly Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 per match. Even in those difficult years, his biggest backing came from his mother, who reportedly sold her jewellery to get him a pair of spiked shoes—an investment he needed to pursue fast bowling properly.
In 2024, Kolkata Knight Riders shared a video featuring Sakib and his mother as they revisited those early days. They spoke about how the family stood firmly together so he could chase his ambition. In the clip, Sakib explained why the shoes mattered so much: “Shoes are very expensive. Proper bowling spikes cost around Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. If we spent that much on shoes, then what would we eat?”
A tale of grit, perseverance, and inspiration has followed Sakib from Gopalganj to the big stage. In the same conversation, his mother, Subuktara Khatoon, recalled the moment the reality of the situation hit home: “He started crying and said, ‘Mummy, I don’t have shoes, how will I play?’ We didn’t have that kind of money. I had to sell my jewellery to somehow get him those shoes.”
Speaking after his impactful outing against Rajasthan Royals on Monday, Sakib described how the debut came together and how he prepared himself. “Thank you so much. Every player hopes for a debut like this, so it feels really good. I’m very happy. (when did he know he was going to play?) The bowling coach Varun bhai informed me a day before the game that I would be playing. From then on, my focus was simply on performing well. Mentally, I prepared myself to give my best,” he said following the match-winning spell.
