Sunrisers Hyderabad have announced the signing of South Africa fast bowler Gerald Coetzee for the rest of the IPL 2026 season. The 25-year-old speedster joins the franchise as a mid-season replacement for David Payne, who was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury earlier this week. Coetzee has been brought into the squad for INR 2 crore and will be available immediately for SRH’s remaining fixtures.
Coetzee arrives with prior IPL experience, having featured in 14 matches in the league so far. He has previously turned out for Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians, and his IPL tally includes 15 wickets. In international cricket, the right-arm pacer has played 4 Tests, 14 ODIs, and 18 T20Is for South Africa, accumulating 67 wickets across formats.
Payne, meanwhile, had played two matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the current IPL 2026 campaign, picking up two wickets. His participation in the remainder of the season has been cut short by an ankle injury. Before that, Payne had joined the SRH squad as a substitute for Jack Edwards, who had been sidelined with a foot injury.
Injuries have disrupted SRH’s plans repeatedly this season. Earlier this week, the franchise lost Brydon Carse to injury and named Dilshan Madushanka as his replacement.
Captain Pat Cummins, who has not yet appeared in an IPL 2026 match, is set to return after undergoing scans on his back in Sydney. He is expected to rejoin the playing group and is most likely to be back in the XI for the match against Rajasthan Royals on April 25.
SRH set for Chennai Super Kings test
Sunrisers Hyderabad will take on five-time champions Chennai Super Kings on Saturday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. SRH enter the contest on the back of a win over the Rajasthan Royals in their previous outing.
Ahead of the clash, SRH head coach Daniel Vettori said the team’s focus is on extending their winning run. He told reporters in the pre-match press conference on Friday, “To get one against the tide, with a really impressive Rajasthan team, and to get a couple of guys on their debut to do so well puts a positive feel within the group. Now it’s a chance to maintain that against a CSK team on the back of two wins in a row.”
With the points table currently close, the match carries extra significance for both sides. SRH are positioned fifth with 4 points from 5 games, and another win over CSK could potentially move them into the top four. Chennai, in contrast, sit eighth in the standings with the same points tally.
