SRH Top the Table After Klaasen, Kishan Guide Win Over Punjab Kings

Sunrisers Hyderabad produced a commanding all-round display to see off Punjab Kings and seize the top spot in the IPL 2026 standings. The match swung decisively after Punjab Kings’ fielding let them down, giving SRH the platform to post a competitive score and then take control in the chase. Heinrich Klaasen made the breakthrough with a classy 69 and Ishan Kishan followed with 55 as SRH reached 235/4 after PBKS chose to bowl first. Despite that strong start from the Hyderabad batters, the real difference came when Punjab’s errors in the field allowed SRH to keep momentum, turning good opportunities into a platform for a big total.

In response, Punjab Kings were kept on a tight leash and ultimately finished on 202/7. Cooper Connolly struck an outstanding unbeaten 107* to keep PBKS in the hunt almost on his own, but SRH’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings, ensuring that Connolly’s brilliance was not enough to pull off the chase. The disciplined bowling, combined with the earlier momentum created by SRH’s batters, sealed a 41-run victory for Hyderabad and handed Punjab their third consecutive defeat.

For Punjab Kings, dropped catches proved to be a recurring problem across the innings. Both Klaasen and Kishan survived early chances before accelerating and punishing the bowling and fielding lapses. During the chase, SRH’s attack kept finding ways to squeeze batters, with Pat Cummins and Shivang Kumar among those who applied consistent pressure as the required rate climbed. While Connolly delivered the kind of innings that can sometimes change the entire complexion of a match, the overall scoreboard never quite caught up to what Punjab needed.

After the loss, Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer was direct in his assessment, highlighting fielding mistakes as the central gap between the two teams. He felt the chase was made far harder than it needed to be, pointing to the early drops that allowed SRH to build runs instead of being forced to slow down. Iyer said, “I think it was a bit too much because we dropped many catches at the start and we could have easily delayed their score by 30 to 40 runs, I guess. Because the wicket kept getting slower and the cutters were holding up a bit. So we weren’t that comprehensive enough on the field, nor in bowling, nor in batting. So I think they played comprehensive cricket and they showed us how to win the match.”

Looking beyond this defeat, Iyer also addressed Punjab’s recent dip in form following a strong beginning to the season. He urged the team to protect the mindset that had worked earlier and to respond constructively to the setbacks. “I feel we got a fairy tale start in this tournament and everyone were in a great space and the mindset was top notch. I think it’s important that we stick with the same mindset. It’s easy to get diverted with talking negative about things. But definitely we got to go back, reflect on things that we didn’t do well in the particular last three matches and see to it that we come back strong,” he added.

Iyer also singled out Cooper Connolly for praise, crediting him for keeping Punjab’s hopes alive for most of the chase. He described Connolly’s approach as fearless and mentally sharp, noting the character the batter brings to the field. “He’s phenomenal. His mindset is top notch and the character he brings onto the field. It’s something that all players can learn from him. And apart from that, I feel that he’s got a knack of scoring big runs in pressure situations. He has done it in the past and today was the right example. He was fearless and his attitude was fantastic against left-handers,” Iyer said, specifically referencing the challenge posed by left-arm bowling.

While Connolly’s century was the standout highlight for PBKS, Iyer admitted that Punjab’s inability to take chances during the match altered the outcome. He explained that he wanted attacking intent from the batter when new batsmen were in, because wickets at that stage were crucial. “I asked him to be attacking, especially when the new batsmen were in because they were on the charge right from ball one. And it was crucial to get wickets at that point of time. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to take catches. I think that was the biggest setback for us in today’s game. But definitely something to reflect on and come back stronger.”
