SRH’s Top-2 Path Laid Out After RCB Clash Ahead of IPL Playoff Race

As the playoff spots for the leading sides are already in place, the focus in the IPL is shifting to the fight for the top-two positions. Finishing in the top bracket brings a valuable second opportunity in the knockout phase. Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans currently sit first and second, but Sunrisers Hyderabad still have a route to climb higher when they take on RCB on Friday night at home. Both Bengaluru and Gujarat have already qualified, yet the remaining league permutations matter because the standings at the top will decide who gets that extra chance. RCB look well positioned at the summit, but a strong SRH showing on their own turf could reshape the table before the final league matches. With momentum behind them, SRH will be looking to unsettle the opposition early and keep their slim top-two hopes alive going into the last stretch of the season.

Gujarat Titans have already completed their league programme, ending with 18 points and a net run rate of 0.695, which keeps them in the second spot for now. RCB are also on 18 points, but they lead the standings on net run rate, currently 1.065. Even so, the scenario is not fully settled yet because SRH are scheduled to play Bengaluru, meaning the points and the margin of victory could still tilt the top-two positions.

How SRH can still finish in the top two

SRH cannot influence Gujarat’s net run rate anymore, having played out all their matches. However, they can still knock RCB out of the top-two bracket if they secure a sufficiently big win. Pat Cummins’ side would likely require a dominant result—around an 87–89 run swing—to push their own net run rate upward enough while pulling RCB’s down into a specific window. With that kind of margin, SRH could move to roughly +0.650, while RCB would slip into the +0.635 to +0.645 range, depending on the exact outcome.

If RCB choose to bat first, SRH’s task becomes even more calculated. They would need to restrict Bengaluru’s total to about 180 before turning the chase into a rapid one. The plan would be to leverage their top order—Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen—to chase the number quickly, potentially within roughly 11 overs, so the NRR equation swings firmly in SRH’s favour.

The earlier meeting between SRH and RCB this season

  1. The most recent encounter between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bengaluru this year came in the IPL 2026 opener on March 28 in Bengaluru.
  2. In that game, RCB chased down the target of 202 after SRH posted 201/9.
  3. RCB won by six wickets with 26 balls remaining, delivering a statement victory from the start of the campaign.
  4. Ishan Kishan’s 80 for SRH was the standout performance for the team batting first.
  5. Virat Kohli contributed an unbeaten 69, while Devdutt Padikkal struck an explosive 26-ball 61, helping the defending champions power through the chase.
