Unbeaten Punjab Kings Eye Win vs Injured Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday

Punjab Kings, the league’s top side so far, are set to lean on their batting firepower when they take on a Lucknow Super Giants unit under pressure in an IPL clash on Sunday. PBKS are the only unbeaten team after five matches, having won four of them, with one fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders ending without a result due to rain. Led by Shreyas Iyer, the franchise also carries a strong net run rate of 1.067, a reflection of how often their bat has delivered under chase pressure.

Form, momentum and the key storyline

  1. Punjab have been particularly ruthless in chase situations since the 2025 season, winning nine of their last 11 matches when batting second.
  2. The same trend showed up in their most recent outing, a victory over Mumbai Indians.
  3. Lucknow, currently placed seventh in the points table, are coming off consecutive defeats and will be looking to arrest a slide.
  4. Their biggest worry is captain Rishabh Pant’s elbow injury following the previous match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Pant was left visibly uncomfortable during that Bengaluru game and retired hurt after facing only three balls. Although he returned with his elbow heavily strapped, he could manage just one run off six deliveries, and his participation in Sunday’s contest remains uncertain.

The earlier encounter against RCB was a one-sided affair for Lucknow, as they managed only 146 runs. Mukul Choudhary and Ayush Badoni offered the main resistance, but overall, the batting unit has struggled to find consistency. So far this season, Lucknow have not yet crossed the 200-run mark.

Punjab, meanwhile, have reached the 200 threshold twice. In their last match against Mumbai Indians, they were cruising at 198 for 3 after 16.3 overs, setting up a platform for a controlled finish. With that kind of batting form, Lucknow will need a near-perfect response both in the powerplay and during the middle overs.

Punjab’s batting strength versus Lucknow’s challenge

Prabhsimran Singh has been in outstanding form for PBKS, contributing 211 runs so far, while Iyer has been equally impactful with 203 runs. Their strike rates of 172.95 and 187.96 respectively highlight how quickly they can turn pressure into momentum. The pair also clicked together effectively in the win over Mumbai Indians, and additional contributions have come from Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly, adding depth to Punjab’s chase and scoring options.

For Lucknow to disrupt Punjab’s rhythm, their bowling unit will have to be sharper than it was in the Bengaluru match. Prince Yadav has been Lucknow’s leading wicket-taker with nine scalps, with Avesh Khan on five and Mohammed Shami on four. Shami was hammered in the other game against Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar, where the batting damage underlined how quickly a bowler can lose control when the fielding and length aren’t right.

Digvesh Rathi also had a tough day against RCB, conceding heavily to Jitesh Sharma and Tim David. He will need to bounce back if Lucknow are to keep Punjab from running away with the chase.

What needs to change for Lucknow

In the batting department, Lucknow’s run production has mostly come from Mukul Choudhary (127), Aiden Markram (120), Mitchell Marsh (115), and Ayush Badoni (113). Even with that output, the team’s overall batting must become more assertive to turn the tide. Big-hitting names such as Marsh and Markram are expected to make a mark during the powerplay, while Nicholas Pooran has been short of runs and will need to find form to help Lucknow mount a serious challenge. Ultimately, if Lucknow are to threaten the top team in the league, their batting will have to click as a unit.
