Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has delivered yet another headline-grabbing night, and at 15 years old he is already rewriting what “fast” looks like in T20 batting. The Rajasthan Royals youngster struck the next major milestone during their meeting with Punjab Kings, becoming the quickest batter in IPL history to reach 400 runs in a single season—doing it in just 167 balls.
Quick facts
- Vaibhav Sooryavanshi reached 400 IPL runs in 167 balls (IPL 2026)
- Previous fastest: Andre Russell, 188 balls in 2019
- Sooryavanshi improved the mark by 21 deliveries
- Sooryavanshi’s knock: 43 off 16 balls
- Rajasthan Royals chased 223, finishing with four balls remaining
- Rajasthan scorers: Yashasvi Jaiswal 51, Donovan Ferreira 52*; Shubham Dubey contributed late
- Punjab innings: Marcus Stoinis 62 off 22 balls; finished 222/4
- Punjab’s season first defeat
The teenager’s surge not only set a new benchmark, it also underlined how quickly he is moving through the record books. He eclipsed Andre Russell’s earlier record of 188 balls from 2019 by a clear margin of 21 balls, establishing a blistering scoring tempo that has defined his IPL 2026 campaign so far.
Record chase takes shape
Sooryavanshi’s latest landmark arrived after a rapid 16-ball stay that produced 43 runs, providing the spark Rajasthan needed in their pursuit of 223. Coming in with intent, the left-hander attacked from the first moments, finding the rope repeatedly and handling both pace and bounce with ease.
His early spell was particularly punishing against Arshdeep Singh, before the momentum carried over into a sequence of aggressive shots off Lockie Ferguson. The boundaries he struck—including towering sixes—shifted pressure firmly onto Punjab’s bowlers and set the chase moving at a pace Rajasthan could sustain.
Even though his innings ended sooner than expected, the damage was already done. When he was dismissed caught off Arshdeep, the platform for the chase was firmly established, leaving the rest of the batting group to finish the job.
At the other end, Yashasvi Jaiswal kept the momentum rolling with a fluent 51. Donovan Ferreira then played the finisher’s role, remaining unbeaten on 52 as Rajasthan closed the chase with four balls to spare.
Along with the steady contributions, a late surge from Shubham Dubey helped ensure the target never became complicated. The result meant Punjab Kings suffered their first defeat of the season, despite an explosive start to their innings.
Punjab’s brief fight
Earlier, Marcus Stoinis had posted a whirlwind 62 off 22 balls to drive Punjab to 222/4. However, Rajasthan’s relentless batting—anchored by the acceleration Sooryavanshi started—proved too much to stop, even with Stoinis’s rapid scoring providing momentum.
Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged the difficulty of containing batters who attack from ball one. “When players come in and go bang from ball one, it becomes an arduous task for bowlers,” he said, pointing to the challenge of bowling to such aggressive intent.
For Jaiswal, the standout was the fearlessness in Sooryavanshi’s approach. “I really enjoyed batting with him… he’s playing amazing,” he said, praising the youngster’s impact and swagger at the crease.
For Sooryavanshi, this is simply another entry in what has already been a dream run. After previously grabbing attention with a record-breaking century earlier in the season, the 15-year-old now sits at the top of the run charts, with his rise showing no sign of slowing down.
