NEW DELHI: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the defining talking point of IPL 2026, thanks to a rare ability to launch boundaries from the first ball and completely swing the momentum within a few overs. The 15-year-old batting prodigy left bowlers constantly reacting, and his performances earned respect across the board—from rival camps as well as his own dressing room.
Sooryavanshi’s output across the season was exceptional by any measure. Opening for the Rajasthan Royals, he finished as the tournament’s leading run-getter, piling up 776 runs in 16 innings at an eye-catching strike rate of 237.30. He also wrote his name into the IPL record books by launching 72 sixes during the campaign, moving past the previous high of 59 maximums set by West Indies legend Chris Gayle.
His standout moment arrived in the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad. With Rajasthan Royals needing a win to stay alive, Sooryavanshi delivered one of the most punishing innings the league has seen — smashing 97 off 29 balls to drive his team into Qualifier 2. He carried that same destructive intent into the next stage as well, producing 96 in Qualifier 2 versus Gujarat Titans. Even though Rajasthan Royals ultimately fell short, losing by seven wickets and missing out on a spot in the final, Sooryavanshi’s fearless batting once again became the headline act.
Among those who took notice of the teenager’s rapid rise was Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Krunal Pandya, who not only faced him during the season but also managed to dismiss him. When asked about his encounters with the Rajasthan Royals youngster, Krunal admitted he enjoyed the challenge.
“Oh, yeah. We played one game against RR in Guwahati. In fact, I got his wicket as well,” Krunal said, as quoted by Times of India.
Krunal then heaped praise on Sooryavanshi, calling him one of the most exciting prospects he has seen. “But boy, what a talent! At 15! Generational talent. To bat like that at 15. Even if you are 30, 40, or 25, to bat like this is commendable. But 15? And he’s not just slogging. That boy has brains.”
The RCB star pointed to the maturity of Sooryavanshi’s innings in the knockout games as evidence that his game is not only about power. “Look at how he batted in Qualifier-2 vs GT. He played the situation. I’m very eager to see how he continues his journey forward in the next ten years,” Krunal added.
