Varun Chakaravarthy Ruled Out as KKR Face RCB in Raipur, Saurabh Dubey In

Varun Chakaravarthy has been ruled out of Kolkata Knight Riders’ pivotal IPL 2026 encounter versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur, dealing a major blow to the three-time champions as they chase a must-win result. The left-arm pacer Saurabh Dubey comes into the XI, with KKR confirming the change after a fitness scare for their key bowler. At the toss, Ajinkya Rahane spoke on the situation: “Varun Chakarvarthy misses out, with a niggle. Saurabh Dubey comes in.”

Varun’s absence creates a major middle-overs gap for KKR

Chakaravarthy had been carrying fitness concerns since KKR’s previous outing against Delhi Capitals, where he looked to struggle during the closing stages of his spell. The worry intensified when footage circulated showing the mystery spinner walking with support, while reports pointed towards a leg-related complication that could severely threaten his availability for the clash against RCB.

KKR assistant coach Shane Watson had earlier indicated that the bowler was being monitored and that he had continued to bowl despite discomfort in recent matches. While the franchise has not formally specified the exact diagnosis, the immediate understanding is that the issue involves his lower body.

The timing is especially damaging for KKR because they will have to plug the loss of one of their most influential bowling weapons in a game they cannot afford to slip. After a shaky start to the season, KKR’s campaign had appeared to be under intense pressure. However, Chakaravarthy’s return to taking wickets became one of the clearest drivers behind their late resurgence.

His impact was stark: he went wicketless in his first three appearances of the tournament. Once he began finding breakthroughs regularly, KKR’s results shifted sharply. The wickets he delivered in the middle overs added a different edge to the bowling plan, giving Rahane the ability to steer games through spin rather than simply focus on damage control.

That momentum has aligned with KKR’s winning stretch. Chakaravarthy’s value was not limited to keeping things tight in terms of run rate. He disrupted partnerships, slowed down periods of acceleration, and allowed Sunil Narine to be used with greater freedom across different phases. With Chakaravarthy, Narine and Anukul Roy together, KKR possessed a spin-heavy structure designed to squeeze opponents during the central overs and force batters into calculated risks.

Now, that framework requires a rethink.

Dubey’s call changes KKR’s bowling balance

Saurabh Dubey’s entry signals a different tactical direction. The Vidarbha left-arm quick joined KKR this season as Akash Deep’s replacement after the India pacer was ruled out due to a lower-back stress injury. Dubey brings an additional left-arm pace option, and he could play a role on a Raipur surface where seamers may find something to work with.

However, the swap alters the shape of the attack. By replacing Chakaravarthy with Dubey, KKR gain another pace option but lose their key middle-overs wicket-taking spinner. Against an RCB batting line-up capable of building momentum through the order, that absence could prove significant.

The change may also influence how KKR deploy Narine. Without Chakaravarthy, Rahane might need to be more cautious with Narine in order to handle crucial middle-over match-ups, rather than using him more aggressively depending on how the innings develops. Anukul Roy could also be pushed into a more prominent role if KKR continue to prioritise spin control during the central phase.

Another concern in a demanding season

The injury adds further pressure to Chakaravarthy’s already busy tournament. Earlier in the campaign, he had played through two fractures in his left hand and still delivered a Player-of-the-Match showing against the Rajasthan Royals. The latest problem appears separate from that earlier hand issue, with the newest concern linked to his leg after the match against Delhi Capitals.

For KKR, the timing could hardly be worse. Their final push has been built on a clearer bowling identity, and Chakaravarthy has been central to that transformation. His absence against RCB leaves them without a bowler who helped swing their season at a moment when the margin for error is close to disappearing.
