Venkatesh Iyer admits frustration after RCB’s Dharamshala heroics for top spot

Venkatesh Iyer’s outing in Dharamshala on Sunday was only his third IPL appearance of the 2026 season, yet it carried the feel of a long-running role. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter finished unbeaten on 73 off 40 balls as RCB overcame Punjab Kings to secure top spot in the race for the playoffs, becoming the first side to qualify. It was also a reminder that when his chances come, his temperament and patience can swing tight matches.

After the game, Iyer was asked about the frustration of waiting for opportunities as RCB’s batting order has been deep and difficult to break into. The India international answered with complete candour, admitting he wanted to play more while also recognising the team’s status and the need for the right balance. He said he tried to push his case with the coaching staff and felt happy that his chance finally arrived.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t frustrated or didn’t want to be out there,” Iyer said. “Players like me want to play and want to do well, but I also understand how long I’ve been around. This is a champion team, and constantly changing the combination isn’t always the right move. I’ve always tried to create an impact with the coaching staff so that I get my moment, and I’m really glad I got it.”

It was not only his first big signal in the tournament, but also his best. In just three IPL innings this season, Iyer has managed 114 runs, and the knock versus PBKS became his highest score so far. He arrived at a crucial stage of the first innings, stepping in after Devdutt Padikkal’s 45 ended in the tenth over.

RCB’s finish and the momentum shift

Iyer then anchored the innings with a strong base and built momentum alongside Virat Kohli and Tim David. Kohli made 58, while David contributed 28, and together they helped RCB shape a powerful late push. Iyer struck eight fours and four sixes in his unbeaten effort, racing to 73* from 40 deliveries and carrying RCB through to 222/4—a total that set PBKS a target of 223.

With 223 required for victory, PBKS lost their early rhythm and paid the price quickly. Openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh were dismissed for 0 and 2 respectively, leaving the chase in trouble from the start. Skipper Shreyas Iyer managed just 1 run from three balls, further widening the gap between the teams.

Shashank Singh tried to rebuild with a composed 56, and Marcus Stoinis offered support with 37. But the recovery never fully took hold, as RCB kept applying pressure and eventually limited PBKS to 199/8 in 20 overs, handing the Bengaluru side a win that confirmed their playoff qualification.

Speaking after the match, Iyer also singled out the partnership with Kohli as the key to how the innings flowed. He said he was fortunate to bat alongside the former India captain, pointing to the communication that Kohli brings at the crease. Iyer noted that effective communication helps the two batters align their running and scoring plans, which is especially crucial when you’re trying to manufacture runs for the team.

“But I was lucky to be batting alongside Virat Kohli,” Iyer said. “The mindset shift is something he’s able to communicate to you. With all the legends of the game, one thing that stands out is communication—the key is that if you can communicate well with your partner, it’s two people out there scoring runs together for the team, so that was the key.”
