Wednesday evening’s Indian Premier League encounter at the Wankhede Stadium between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad drew plenty of attention for the cricket on show—but it was also memorable for the presence of former India batter Vinod Kambli. Kambli, who has been dealing with serious health concerns in recent years, made the trip to the venue and took his place in the stands as the match turned into a high-scoring affair.
Despite looking visibly frail and struggling with his mobility, Kambli stayed to watch the contest unfold. In a night where there was little to dampen the mood, SRH emerged the winner in comfortable fashion, giving fans plenty to cheer while Kambli looked on from the sidelines.
A clip that has since circulated widely online shows Kambli being supported by two people—friends or family members, though the exact relationship wasn’t clear. The sight was moving, not only because it highlighted how difficult it is for him to walk, but also because it suggested that—at least for the moment—he was managing to get by well enough to enjoy the match in person.
The 54-year-old Kambli represented India in 17 Tests and 104 ODIs. At one stage, many fans and observers even considered him to be a superior batter to his childhood friend Sachin Tendulkar. Coming up from a difficult, underprivileged background, Kambli eventually rose to the top tier of Indian cricket, carving out a reputation as a gifted stroke-maker.
However, his playing career wasn’t marked by consistent discipline, and after his international days ended, he reportedly turned to alcohol. Over time, that decision is believed to have taken a heavy toll on his body and overall wellbeing.
There was further concern earlier this month when his friend Marcus Couto shared a health update that quickly set off alarm bells among cricket supporters. Couto said that since Kambli had been hospitalised in Thane roughly 18 months earlier, he had been dealing with a clot in his brain. He also claimed that Kambli’s memory has been affected, describing how the former batter can remember things and then forget them soon after. According to Couto, Kambli has stopped drinking, but still smokes at times—despite warnings that smoking is not allowed because it could raise the risk of a brain stroke. Couto also referenced doctor Aadil Chagla, who has been overseeing Kambli’s treatment.
While the report spread rapidly, Kambli’s wife, Andrea Hewitt, later rejected the claims. “By God’s grace, Vinod is fine. I don’t know who is spreading false information about his health,” Andrea said, dismissing the fears that had been raised online.
When viewed alongside the video from Wednesday night, it became clear why Andrea’s message carried weight. Kambli may not be in the best of health, but the fact that he was able to reach the ground and watch a major IPL game suggested his situation is not as dire as some reports had implied.
Kambli’s journey continues to serve as a reminder of how unpredictable life can be—how quickly circumstances can shift, sometimes in the span of a single day. From highs to lows and back again, change can arrive suddenly. For fans who value the legacy he left behind, it was also a powerful moment to see him step out of his home and take in a thrilling evening of T20 cricket.
