Virat Kohli Draws Fresh Test Talk as Fans Debate Latest ‘Rage-Bait’ Claims

Virat Kohli has been pulled into fresh Test-cricket talk not once, not twice, but on three separate occasions within a single week—right in the same month that he had surprised the cricket world by announcing his retirement from the longest format a year earlier. First, it was a small, red-ball themed gesture involving his childhood mentor. Then came hints about conversations regarding a potential return. Now, another appearance has set social media buzzing, with many fans convinced that Kohli is intentionally stoking interest in a possible comeback.

The first spark came from a pair of shoes with a red-ball theme that Kohli gifted to his childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma. Sharma later shared that he had recently spoken about Test cricket with the former India captain, adding fuel to the idea that Kohli may still be closely following—and perhaps thinking about—the format.

Kohli’s most recent action has made the chatter grow louder. Earlier this week, the batter posted an Instagram video showing him visiting Rajkumar and handing over a specially designed shoe inspired by the red ball. Rajkumar reacted immediately with a line that resonated with viewers: “I always remember why red-ball cricket was important for you.”

It was in May last year that Kohli shocked many by announcing his retirement from Test cricket. Even though speculation had been swirling for weeks, the final call still landed as a major surprise for a player who had become one of the most recognisable faces of the format in modern times.

In an era where cricket continues to tilt toward franchise leagues and shorter versions of the game, Kohli had stood out as a key ambassador for Tests. He played with intensity and authority in the red-ball arena, giving the format renewed relevance at a time when many feared it was losing momentum.

Just two days after the Instagram clip, Rajkumar Sharma added more to the comeback narrative when he said he had recently discussed the idea of Kohli returning to Test cricket. He pointed out that the discussion came after repeated requests from devoted fans. “We are talking about it… let’s see what happens,” Rajkumar said on the Express Cafe podcast when asked about Kohli’s reaction to the growing pressure.

And when those two moments weren’t enough, Kohli once again had social media racing on Saturday. He appeared alongside Ravi Shastri in a podcast, wearing a sweater that many supporters felt looked like classic Test attire. Within minutes, the internet filled with comments—some playful, others more pointed—accusing Kohli of “rage-baiting” his followers by keeping speculation alive around a potential return.

Even with the online frenzy, Kohli has not offered any official response to the rumours, and it is possible he won’t. The bigger picture suggests he has already moved on from that chapter of his career. He may remain among the most vocal advocates for Test cricket, but advocacy alone does not necessarily mean he is planning a comeback.

More importantly, even if Kohli were to show interest in returning to red-ball cricket, it would not automatically translate into a spot in the Indian Test team. His average of 32 across his final five years in the format—highlighted by a disappointing tour of Australia—was at the centre of the debate about his future in Tests in the first place.

After the conclusion of IPL 2026, Kohli is expected to put his primary focus back on ODI cricket, with the 2027 World Cup emerging as his clear target.

Kohli retired from Test cricket in May 2025. He ended his red-ball career with 9,230 runs in 123 matches at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and seven double hundreds. He is currently active only in ODI cricket, and the 2027 World Cup is widely expected to be his final international assignment.
