Virat Kohli led tributes in memory of former Punjab cricketer Amanpreet Singh Gill after the ex-India Under-19 fast bowler died at the age of 36 in Chandigarh on Wednesday. Kohli, who had spent time with Gill in India’s junior ranks, described the news as both shocking and heartbreaking in a heartfelt post on social media.
Tributes pour in for Amanpreet Gill
- Kohli said he was “shocked and saddened” to learn about Gill’s passing and sent prayers along with strength to Gill’s family and loved ones, adding “Rest in peace” and “Om Shanti” in his message.
- Gill was a right-arm medium-pace bowler who played six first-class matches for Punjab and also featured in the opening season of the Indian Premier League for Kings XI Punjab.
- During his youth career, Gill represented India in multiple Under-19 ODI matches and also played a three-day Under-19 Test in 2007, with tours that included England, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
- Kohli noted that Gill narrowly missed out on selection for India’s successful 2008 Under-19 World Cup team, which was captained by Kohli.
- The Punjab Cricket Association released a condolence statement mourning the loss and remembering Gill’s contribution to Punjab cricket, highlighting his roles with India Under-19, Kings XI Punjab and Punjab, and mentioning his position as a Member of the Senior Selection Committee in Punjab.
- Shikhar Dhawan also offered condolences, expressing sadness at Gill’s passing and extending sympathy to his family, friends and everyone who knew him, with “Om Shanti” in the end.
- Yuvraj Singh remembered Gill as a “quiet, hardworking cricketer” who loved the game, recalling that they shared the dressing room in their early days, and sent heartfelt condolences to Gill’s loved ones before signing off with “Rest in peace” and “Om Shanti.”
