Watch Rajat Patidar’s 20-ball fifty as Hardik’s Mumbai slump continues

The Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru met in the IPL 2026 on Sunday, and the contest at the Wankhede Stadium ended with Hardik Pandya’s side slipping to their third straight defeat of the campaign. Rajat Patidar, captaining RCB, played a quickfire knock that lit up the venue—he struck a 20-ball fifty to set the tone. Hardik tried to answer with his own thrust, but his stay at the crease ended at 40 from 22 deliveries. As soon as the MI skipper was dismissed, Krunal Pandya—who now represents Bengaluru—celebrated the wicket in emphatic fashion, underlining how significant that moment was for both himself and the team.

The turning point came when Hardik went for a big hit against Jacob Duffy, RCB’s leading wicket-taker this season. Duffy’s delivery found the edge of the attempt, and Romario Shepherd completed the catch. Krunal’s reaction was immediate and exuberant, capturing the intensity of the rivalry. A clip of the moment circulated widely, with the hashtag #MIvRCB and names of the key players featuring in the post.

In the match itself, Mumbai Indians won the toss and chose to bowl first. That decision did not stop RCB from building a formidable total, as Bengaluru reached 240/4 in their 20 overs. Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, and Rajat Patidar all contributed half-centuries, giving the innings a steady base and then a controlled acceleration near the end.

After the game, Hardik addressed the issues that cost Mumbai dearly. He said the team surrendered too many runs and, in recent outings, has repeatedly ended up chasing momentum—both in batting and bowling. Hardik stressed that MI need to review their approach and rework their plans, with particular emphasis on the powerplay, where he believes the side must start stronger and set the tone rather than recover later.

“We conceded way too many as well. For the last couple of games, as a bowling unit and as a batting unit, we have been catching up. We really need to reflect on what we can best do and how we can get the momentum we require. A lot of things need a rethink. We have to see what other options we can have with the bat and the ball. We still need to bat and bowl well. If you do that, irrespective of the toss, we should be fine. We are talking about how to get some momentum in the powerplay. We are trying to catch up in both departments. We will see what we can do in the next game,” Hardik said during the presentation.

Chasing 241, Mumbai’s start looked promising. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton put together 62/0 during the powerplay, giving MI a platform. Yet the momentum shifted quickly when Rohit’s injury interrupted the flow, and Rickelton along with Tilak Varma fell with wickets arriving in the same over—moments that tilted the contest back toward Bengaluru.

Even with contributions from Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, MI continued to lose wickets at crucial junctures. A late surge from Sherfane Rutherford kept the chase alive, as he smashed an unbeaten 71 off 31 balls. However, the finish was not enough; Mumbai Indians were bowled out for 222/5 and fell short by 18 runs.

Rutherford’s finishing burst drew praise from Hardik as well. He said the team was eager to bring him in, largely because of his reputation as a power-hitter. Hardik added that Rutherford’s impact gives Mumbai an added layer of security and should also translate into greater confidence as the season moves forward.
