The 2026 Indian Premier League delivered plenty of fireworks on Friday night when Sunrisers Hyderabad took on Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Virat Kohli and Travis Head ended up stealing the spotlight in the aftermath of a heated mid-match moment. SRH dominated the contest, beating RCB by 55 runs, but the real talking point arrived when Kohli declined to shake hands with Head during the exchange at the end of the tussle, a decision that instantly sparked debate among fans and pundits.
To be clear, Kohli did complete handshakes with the right people. He greeted Sunrisers captain Pat Cummins and also shook hands with the SRH side, yet when Head offered his hand, Kohli appeared to ignore him entirely. Head extended the handshake, but once he noticed Kohli walking straight past without even turning his head, there was little choice left for him but to move on.
While the exact trigger for the hostility wasn’t spelled out, it seemed to have roots in what happened earlier during RCB’s chase. The general sense was that Kohli’s stinging approach may have begun with sledging aimed at Head. At one stage, Kohli appeared to ask Head to bowl to him “a few deliveries,” a tactic that looked like an effort to provoke rather than simply compete. Head, though, had not been used as an impact player for much of the innings, and Kohli’s attempt to take a dig through “impact sub” type gestures only added fuel to the simmering tension.
For Kohli, the plan didn’t last long. After working himself into the sledging battle, he could not stay at the crease and was dismissed for 15 runs off 11 balls. That dismissal set the stage for Head’s response. When Kohli was out, Head fired back with a sharp line: “Mate, you got out before I even came on to bowl.” Kohli, however, had no comeback to match the punch of that retort.
There is no definitive word on who was at fault in the wider exchange, but with what has been seen so far, Kohli’s behaviour has come under scrutiny. The star batter is known for playing with intense passion and for being deeply involved in even the smallest moments—screaming, gesturing, and sometimes directing harsh words at opponents when the contest demands it. That intensity can also spill over and unsettle players from the other camp.
Still, Head is not being presented as a neutral bystander either. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2024-25, he sledged aggressively as well, and one of his gestures drew significant controversy during a difficult stretch for India.
As things escalated between Kohli and Head, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan was among those watching from the commentary box. Pathan later reflected on the incident, saying, “See what happened during the game can happen, in the heat of the moment. That’s okay but what happened after that wasn’t right.”
On the field, the result mattered greatly for SRH. They required a big win to keep their chances alive of finishing inside the top two, and they delivered in emphatic style. Yet, despite the heavy defeat of RCB, it still wasn’t sufficient to leapfrog either Royal Challengers Bengaluru or Gujarat Titans on net run rate. Even with the loss, RCB ended up on top due to a superior net run rate compared with GT and SRH.
All three sides—RCB, Gujarat Titans and SRH—ended the league phase level on 18 points, it was noted. But for the time being, the numbers and the standings have been pushed into the background, as the Kohli-Head showdown has taken centre stage as the key talking point from Friday night’s match.
