He believes the IPL\u2019s consistent engagement helps attract advertisers and sustains strong digital momentum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nWhy Burman sees a stronger media rights future<\/h2>\n
Burman pointed to the scale of the recent franchise bids as a clear signal for the market. He referenced the current media rights cycle spanning 2023 to 2027, which generated Rs 48,000 crore, roughly USD 6.2 billion at the exchange rate at the time. In his view, the next cycle should benefit from the heightened investor confidence created by those valuations.<\/p>\n
While he noted that television-rights numbers could potentially come under pressure, he said the digital side is set to grow significantly. The co-owner cited recent deals involving Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, each drawing successful bids from new investors around the USD 2 billion mark\u2014USD 1.65 billion for Rajasthan Royals and USD 1.78 billion for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the uncertainty around forecasting exact figures, Burman said it would be premature to name a precise value because the media business is evolving at a fast pace. He highlighted that the relationship between television and digital is changing every year, and that audience behaviour is increasingly centred on mobile usage and streaming-first viewing.<\/p>\n
In that context, Burman described the IPL\u2019s ability to maintain engagement year after year as a major confidence booster. He stressed that relatively few sporting leagues worldwide are able to deliver such consistent audience interaction across seasons. He added that the league continues to draw advertisers, commands massive audiences, and sustains strong digital traction\u2014factors that support a healthy long-term commercial outlook.<\/p>\n
Even if growth rates are not always straight-line, Burman said the league\u2019s longer-term trajectory remains \u201cextremely strong.\u201d He reiterated that a 20\u201330% jump in the media rights cycle would not be surprising, and he spoke as someone who holds a 48% stake in Punjab Kings.<\/p>\n
IPL valuations now benchmarked with global leagues<\/h2>\n
Burman also argued that the interest from global investors\u2014and the money teams attract\u2014has placed the IPL in the same conversation as major franchise sports leagues such as the NFL, EPL and NBA. He said those valuations are not being built purely on present-day earnings; instead, they reflect confidence in the league\u2019s long-term upside as a sports and entertainment product.<\/p>\n
He described the IPL today as one of the world\u2019s leading sporting leagues in terms of engagement, reach and commercial value, which he believes is why the market is recognising it as such. Burman further said investors increasingly view IPL franchises not only as cricket properties, but as long-term assets spanning sports, media and entertainment.<\/p>\n
What stands out to him, he added, is that franchise valuations are now being measured against global league benchmarks. He noted that earlier, Indian sports assets were often valued in relative isolation, but the current conversation places IPL teams alongside franchises from leagues like the NBA, EPL and NFL\u2014an indicator, in his view, of the IPL\u2019s growing global standing.<\/p>\n
Burman also linked franchise valuations directly to media rights pricing. He said there is both a psychological and commercial connection: if investors are prepared to commit such large sums to buy into teams, it signals strong belief in the league\u2019s future earning potential. He added that broadcasters and digital platforms pay attention to those signals because their own investments also depend on long-term audience expansion and monetisation opportunities.<\/p>\n
Building beyond the match window: a year-round ecosystem<\/h2>\n
Looking ahead, Burman said the IPL\u2019s priority should be to deepen engagement and strengthen a year-round ecosystem. He explained that expanding the tournament in terms of the number of games will likely happen only when there is a broader window available, but he argued there is still plenty that can be done immediately on the fan-engagement front and around building the league\u2019s presence outside match days.<\/p>\n
He contrasted the IPL\u2019s current timeframe\u2014just a little over two months\u2014with leagues like the EPL, NBA and NFL, whose seasons occupy a much longer span. Burman\u2019s view was that the next stage of growth for the IPL should go beyond simply adding more matches or increasing revenue, since the league has already achieved extraordinary domestic scale.<\/p>\n
One major area of opportunity, he said, is global fan development. Burman pointed out that IPL franchise followings already exist around the world because cricket audiences are no longer constrained by geography. He added that digital platforms have helped turn teams into global brands, and that the IPL can further expand internationally through fan events, content collaborations and overseas engagement strategies.<\/p>\n
Matches and teams: what Burman would prefer<\/h2>\n
When asked whether he would prefer more games or more teams, Burman said the number of matches is expected to rise from 74 to 94, though he indicated that such a change cannot happen within the current window. He said that after 2027, the number of games is likely to increase, but the final shape would be heavily influenced by international cricket commitments.<\/p>\n
With 10 teams in place, he suggested the current match range is probably workable and could allow for a measured increase over time if scheduling permits. However, Burman emphasised that cricket is different from many other global sports because players also carry significant international obligations.<\/p>\n
He flagged workload management as an increasingly serious issue given the volume of cricket across formats and leagues.
