Finn Allen is starting to look like a difference-maker in IPL 2026, and his recent run of form has been hard to ignore. After a superb 100 not out from 47 balls in a chase of only 143 against Delhi Capitals (DC), Allen followed it up on Saturday with a match-defining 93 off 35 balls versus Gujarat Titans (GT). The second knock arrived against what many consider the tournament\u2019s most formidable bowling unit, making the impact even more significant for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).<\/p>\n
For Allen and KKR, this kind of rhythm is especially welcome. Their overseas opener had earlier endured a stretch of disappointing or merely adequate scores, and Allen attributed the slump to the pressure he was placing on himself. Speaking at the press conference after KKR defeated GT by 29 runs to keep their campaign alive, Allen said he had been \u201ca shell of a human for a bit\u201d and that the struggle was self-inflicted.<\/p>\n
He added that his own approach had become too heavy, pointing to his April contribution of 81 runs across five matches. That spell ultimately saw him left out of the playing XI, forcing KKR to shift to \u201cplan B.\u201d Since then, however, May has delivered numbers much closer to what his reputation promises: 29, 100 not out, 18, and 93. Those returns mirror the kind of finishing he showcased earlier in the year as well, when he struck 100 not out off 33 balls in the T20 World Cup semi-final against South Africa in March at Eden Gardens, his home ground for IPL.<\/p>\n
Allen also explained how time away from the side helped him reset mentally. He said that once you are dropped, you get a chance to breathe, step back, and view things differently, before stressing that he truly loves playing cricket and batting. In his view, he had not been enjoying it as much as he should have because of the constant pressure he was applying to himself. He described the break as beneficial learning and something that did him good.<\/p>\n
Gujarat\u2019s bowling approach played a major role in Allen\u2019s success, with the fast-bowling attack targeting the short-of-a-length zone. Ambati Rayudu highlighted this on ESPNcricinfo\u2019s TimeOut show, noting that Allen enjoys pace and tends to look for scoring opportunities on the leg side and the on-side. Rayudu said the GT bowlers delivered those short-of-length balls in exactly the areas Allen wanted.<\/p>\n
Rayudu also acknowledged that there was a brief moment where Allen looked slightly troubled when the ball swung a touch early\u2014he referenced a spell where Allen made 16 runs off nine balls after three overs. Still, he insisted the innings was \u201cpretty clinical.\u201d He pointed out that Allen was reading the length well and even managed to handle Kagiso Rabada, including a sequence where a short-of-a-length delivery turned into a six over midwicket in the fourth over. Rayudu summed it up by saying that once a batter deposits a delivery for six even when it comes from a bowler\u2019s strength, the bowler is forced into a tougher task, and Allen \u201cmet fire with fire\u201d to produce what he called a standout innings.<\/p>\n
Allen further described his batting plan, explaining that the first priority was to look for a four or a six. He also pointed out that in his major innings so far, he has cleared the ropes ten times. If the big shot was not available, his next objective was to secure a single rather than take unnecessary risks.<\/p>\n
He said the strategy always depends on the pitch. Against GT, he believed the wicket would start tough, particularly because they were facing two of the competition\u2019s best opening bowlers. Allen\u2019s intention was to take whatever he could\u2014if the ball came in a position where he could attack, he would go for boundaries, and if not, he aimed to either get off strike or simply avoid losing his wicket. He added that once Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed, he knew he had to take a bit more responsibility, and from there he wanted to remain at the crease for as long as possible.<\/p>\n
Allen told reporters that the core idea was to protect his intent early in the innings, set himself up in good batting positions, and try to hit when the opportunity presented itself. If the ball was not there to be struck, he would focus on rotating the strike and improving his positioning so he could be more consistent. He linked that to handling the ball moving off the wicket and the swing. In short, he said the plan was to keep it simple.<\/p>\n
Sanjay Bangar said one area he has noticed improving is Allen\u2019s game against spin. On Saturday, the first spin of the KKR innings arrived when Rashid Khan bowled the eighth over. Allen struck the first three balls for 6, 6 and 4, using the long-on, midwicket and straight directions. When R Sai Kishore came on, the first ball Allen faced was also hit for six, launched down the ground and over long-on. Kishore eventually dismissed Allen, but by then Allen had already put on a commanding display against the spinners.<\/p>\n
Bangar said Allen\u2019s approach versus spin has improved \u201cby leaps and bounds,\u201d describing how he now stays back on the back foot and disrupts the length of the spinners effectively. He also recalled a previous version of Allen from his time around RCB, where Allen was previously more one-sided, often batting with a closed face. Bangar explained that an open face typically helps create the bat swing needed to clear areas such as mid-off, long-off, and even to cut past point.<\/p>\n
Bangar concluded that Allen now scores across all parts of the ground, which creates constant doubt for bowlers about where to pitch the ball.
