Punjab Kings\u2019 hopes of reaching the IPL 2026 playoffs took a severe hit on Sunday as Shreyas Iyer\u2019s team slumped to their sixth straight defeat. In Dharamsala, Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured a 23-run win, with Venkatesh Iyer and Virat Kohli striking half-centuries, while Rasikh Salam Dar shone with three wickets. The defeat keeps PBKS in fourth place, but their tally now stands at 13 points from 13 matches.<\/p>\n

With one league game remaining, Punjab Kings can still keep their qualification alive\u2014but the path is narrow. Their final fixture is against Lucknow Super Giants, and even if they win, their progress will hinge on how other results shape up, along with Net Run Rate (NRR).<\/p>\n

Playoffs permutations after PBKS\u2019 loss<\/h2>\n

  1. Punjab Kings must beat Lucknow Super Giants in their last group-stage match.<\/li>\n
  2. Even with a PBKS win, other teams will need to drop points for them to finish in the top four.<\/li>\n
  3. If Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders each win only one of their remaining games, PBKS could fall short of the 15-point threshold.<\/li>\n
  4. CSK and KKR each have two matches left in the league stage.<\/li>\n
  5. Rajasthan Royals have three matches remaining, including a clash against Delhi Capitals on Sunday.<\/li>\n
  6. Sunrisers Hyderabad must lose both of their remaining matches for them to remain on 14 points.<\/li>\n
  7. If SRH end on 14 and PBKS win their final game, a playoffs spot becomes possible assuming only one other side reaches 16 points.<\/li>\n
  8. If KKR win both of their remaining matches and PBKS also win their last game, both teams would finish on 15 points, with NRR potentially deciding the final top-four spot.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What Iyer said after the defeat<\/h2>\n

    Speaking after the match, Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer reflected on how the game swung early. He said the team had started well, but after the powerplay they failed to keep attacking effectively against the bowlers, adding that the chase was ultimately shaped by the early phase after they lost wickets.<\/p>\n

    Iyer noted that when Punjab Kings went three down, much of their scoring came from Prabhsimran and Priyansh. He also pointed out that the starts they received in the powerplay in that game were not matched this time, and that his own dismissal came earlier than hoped.<\/p>\n

    While he admitted disappointment, Iyer praised the middle-overs contributions, calling the performances by Shashank and Stoinis commendable, along with a few other batters who kept the chase competitive. He said they were close to a run rate of nearly 10 an over at one stage, but still finished short.<\/p>\n

    On the bowling side, Iyer highlighted the impact of Bhuvneshwar and Hazlewood, describing their spell as a key factor.
