Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer conceded that their IPL 2026 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru was effectively decided during the powerplay, after the team suffered a 23-run loss at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala on Sunday. Bengaluru set a daunting target of 223, and Punjab\u2019s chase never truly gained traction once wickets started falling early. Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh and Iyer himself were all dismissed cheaply within the opening three overs, leaving the hosts reeling at 19\/3 and forcing them to chase from an awkward position despite a later fightback.<\/p>\n

What Iyer said after the defeat<\/h2>\n

  1. Iyer acknowledged that Bengaluru\u2019s early momentum made the difference, stating that RCB took the attack to the bowlers right after the powerplay and that Punjab could not take enough wickets in response.<\/li>\n
  2. He said reaching 222 was a respectable effort, but insisted the game had been lost in the initial overs, when wickets and pressure piled up quickly.<\/li>\n
  3. Reflecting on the chase, the captain pointed to the lack of strong starts from Arya and Prabhsimran, who had been among Punjab\u2019s most reliable run-scorers across the season.<\/li>\n
  4. Iyer also cited the chase pattern after the early losses, noting that most of Punjab\u2019s scoring burden had fallen on Prabhsimran and Priyansh, and that his own dismissal further tilted the balance.<\/li>\n
  5. While he expressed disappointment, he praised Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis for their aggressive efforts, adding that several other batters in the middle also contributed, even though Punjab still fell short.<\/li>\n
  6. He credited the bowling impact of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood, saying their breakthroughs prevented a full recovery.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Punjab Kings ultimately closed on 199\/8, despite a determined push from Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis. Shashank struck 56 from just 27 balls, while Stoinis added 37 off 25 deliveries. Still, the required run rate continued to climb after the early damage, and the finishing effort was not enough to bridge the gap.<\/p>\n

    The match also carried significant playoff implications. The result confirmed Royal Challengers Bengaluru as the first side to lock in a place in the IPL 2026 playoffs, with RCB reaching 18 points from 13 matches following the win.<\/p>\n

    Even with their slim prospects, Iyer chose to keep the mindset positive. He said he would continue to approach the next fixture with confidence ahead of Punjab\u2019s upcoming match against Lucknow Super Giants, insisting that results do not determine his attitude and that he does not dwell on the past.<\/p>\n

    From a standings perspective, Punjab\u2019s qualification hopes now appear extremely difficult.
