New Delhi: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was cruising at 43 runs off 17 balls when a voice from nearby joked that the onslaught had become so familiar it hardly looked unusual. And on Sunday night at Arun Jaitley Stadium, when he walked out to face Delhi Capitals and lifted his IPL 2026 tally of sixes to 43\u2014three of them coming in the match\u2014it fit the script. The total is now the highest number of sixes struck by an Indian batter in a single IPL season, overtaking Abhishek Sharma\u2019s 42 from 2024.<\/p>\n
Yet the fireworks were not matched by a similarly dominant standing in the Orange Cap race at that moment. With 440 runs in his account before the contest began, Sooryavanshi was outside the top ten. The momentum swung quickly: after adding a further 46 runs off just 21 deliveries, including three maximums and five boundaries, he climbed to sixth place. His stay in the middle, however, ended sooner than RR would have wanted, with Madhav Tiwari playing the role of the stopper.<\/p>\n
Tiwari, a 22-year-old quick from Delhi Capitals, had already announced his impact earlier in the tournament with a decisive spell against Punjab Kings on May 11. In that match he finished with figures of 2\/40 and also produced an unbeaten cameo of 18, earning him a spot in the playing XI for a second straight game. On this night, he again delivered when it mattered, registering 2\/27. Lungi Ngidi, with 2\/24, was slightly more miserly, while Mitchell Starc struck with greater menace, taking 4\/40.<\/p>\n
Starc\u2019s most damaging spell came when he struck three times in an over\u2014an attack that left him close to a hat-trick. His wickets included Riyan Parag, Donovan Ferreira and Ravi Singh, tightening the contest at a crucial stage. But the biggest swing, arguably, was Sooryavanshi\u2019s dismissal. It did not just slow RR\u2019s momentum; it also removed the possibility of the innings turning into an even bigger haul later on.<\/p>\n
Even with the wicket, a massive total still looked possible for Rajasthan Royals. By the 14th over, RR had posted 160\/2, powered by a 72-run partnership between Dhruv Jurel and Riyan Parag. Parag carried the scoring burden, reaching 51 off 26 balls as the innings continued to build pressure on Delhi.<\/p>\n
As the innings moved toward the finish, Tiwari struck again, this time accounting for Shubham Dubey as the Delhi bowlers started to execute a variety of plans more effectively than they had at home earlier in the season. The changes in approach were visible: Nigid mixed slower deliveries described as \u201cuns\u201d with balls that climbed awkwardly towards batters. In the end, RR were restricted to 193\/8, notably short of a 220-plus score that had seemed within reach at one point. Over the final six overs, Rajasthan managed only 33 runs, losing six wickets in the process.<\/p>\n
During the mid-innings interaction, Tiwari explained that he had entered the season planning to carry several different variations and trust them repeatedly. He said he had been working on those skills and hoped the results would continue to come his way. He also pointed to the pitch, calling it gripping, and added that he wanted to place himself in high-pressure situations during training, using matchups in the nets\u2014mentioning David Miller, Ashutosh Sharma and KL Rahul\u2014to understand how to bowl in different phases of the tournament.<\/p>\n
Delhi Capitals, in response, appeared to be moving steadily toward the 194-run target in much the same way Rajasthan had started quickly. Abhishek Porel and KL Rahul combined for 105 runs in under 10 overs, and the chase looked very much on course. However, as had happened to RR\u2019s innings, Delhi too lost control in a hurry, with wickets falling one after another.<\/p>\n
Porel made 51, Rahul struck 56 and Axar Patel remained unbeaten on 34, but the chase grew tense as the middle and lower order failed to provide the finishing boost. Sahil Parakh (9), Tristan Stubbs (4) and David Miller (9) all departed without making much of an impact, leaving Delhi scrambling for a path to the finish.<\/p>\n
To keep the chase alive, Jofra Archer played the key role for Rajasthan. His 2\/35 ensured that RR stayed in the contest by slowing the flow of runs and taking crucial wickets at the right moments. Another turning point arrived when Riyan Parag entrusted the over to Donovan Ferreira. In the 18th over, Ferreira was struck for 16 runs, a hit that briefly eased the pressure and gave Delhi space to complete the job.<\/p>\n
With 12 runs in the penultimate over and 10 coming off the final two balls, Delhi Capitals crossed the line in the end and ended their home losing streak. In the larger picture, Rajasthan Royals are still in the playoff hunt, but this was one of those nights where their batting cruise looked promising\u2014only for the chase to be kept within reach and eventually finished.
