NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians entered their meeting with Kolkata Knight Riders with the tag of having already fallen out of the IPL 2026 playoff contention. With qualification no longer on the table, the five-time champions were expected to take the game on at Eden Gardens. Instead, their batting effort collapsed under pressure, with none of the MI batters reaching even the 35-run mark as the innings unraveled.<\/p>\n
Asked to bat first, Mumbai got off to a tough start and lost wickets early. Ryan Rickelton walked back for 6, Naman Dhir was dismissed for a duck, while Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav managed only 15 runs each. As wickets kept arriving, Tilak Varma was tasked with stabilising the innings and giving MI a chance to post something within reach. The left-hander, however, struggled to get going, making just 20 runs from 32 balls with a strike rate of 62.50.<\/p>\n
That outing also brought Tilak an unwanted IPL milestone that had not been touched for 14 years. The last time a batter faced 30 balls or more in an IPL innings but ended with a strike rate lower than Tilak\u2019s was Michael Hussey, who scored 19 off 32 deliveries at a strike rate of 59.37 for Chennai Super Kings against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur in May 2012.<\/p>\n
Despite the disappointment against KKR, Tilak has been one of MI\u2019s bright spots in IPL 2026 so far. Across 13 matches, he has amassed 356 runs at an average of 32.36, striking at 148.95. His campaign has included one century and two fifties.<\/p>\n
Against Kolkata, though, the attacking batter who can swing matches nearly by himself failed to find the rhythm needed to keep the scoreboard moving. KKR\u2019s bowlers kept a tight grip on proceedings throughout, with Sunil Narine, Cameron Green and Saurabh Dubey leading the effort using disciplined spells that prevented MI from gaining momentum. As a result, Mumbai were restricted to 147\/8.<\/p>\n
Narine struck early by removing Rickelton. Dubey then delivered a quick double blow, dismissing Rohit and Suryakumar in close succession. Rohit reached double-figure boundaries with two sixes during his 15-ball stay, but Suryakumar\u2019s brief cameo of 15 off six balls came to an end when Dubey got him out.<\/p>\n
Tilak Varma and captain Hardik Pandya tried to rebuild with a 43-run stand, but neither batter managed to break free even as the innings moved forward on a track offering help to the bowlers. Tilak was eventually caught by Anukul Roy off Kartik Tyagi. Hardik\u2019s stay, described by some as scratchy, ended with Narine bowling him for 27 off 26 deliveries.<\/p>\n
Will Jacks contributed a brisk 14, but his effort was not enough to lift the late phase as he was run out following a sharp piece of work that involved Rinku Singh and Varun Chakravarthy.<\/p>\n
There was only a modest late surge from Corbin Bosch, who finished unbeaten on 32 off 18 balls, striking three fours and two sixes. Deepak Chahar added 10 off seven balls to help MI recover slightly before the innings concluded.<\/p>\n
From KKR\u2019s side, Saurabh Dubey and Cameron Green took two wickets each, while Kartik Tyagi also finished with a pair. Narine once again proved pivotal, delivering a tight spell of 1\/13 in his four overs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
